Revolution Chiropractics’ Revolutionary Way

What do we do at Revolution Chiropractic and how is this revolutionary?

The primary objective for us at Revolution Chiropractic unlike any other Chiropractic Office is to make sure we reset your structure to normal. Most chiropractor talk about restoring your posture but this is not the same as your structure. Some chiropractors will even go as far as saying that they are restoring your structure but they are not doing anything other than standard adjustments of the spine.
The structure does not change with standard adjustments alone. I’ve spent 5 years analysing and researching this topic and although adjustments are literally the most amazing this you could do for your body… and they are a great tool for resetting your nervous system and improving mobility and flexibility, reducing pain and discomfort… they won’t be as effective as they can really have the potential to be if you don’t follow up the adjustments with some specific rehabilitation. Also… structural corrective chiropractors will utilise different adjustments techniques proven to improve your structure. The standard way most chiropractors adjust you just won’t do it.

Firstly let’s clear up some misinformation out there about posture and the correction of it…

Your posture depends on your structure. So any postural things you improve will not be long term if your structure is out. There are many practitioners that are posture focused but from my knowledge and understanding this is kind of a bit of waste of time if your structure is out. & most of these practitioners won’t look at your structure at all, they don’t know how to access your structure and how to correct it. First of all, a structural corrective chiropractic adjustment is needed before you do any rehab otherwise your structure won’t change. How can it when it’s been fixated in one position for years potentially? There is so much adhesion and scar tissue around some of these structural shifts that an superficial exercise won’t have that much effect on.

You need a structural corrective chiropractic adjustment to start the engine. These adjustments literally fire up your joint and muscle receptors and there’s new information being fed from your body to your brain via you nervous system. Then your brain can alter its control of your body / make it more appropriate and better.⁣

So now…what do I mean by structure and what’s a normal structure?

structural chiropractic
Well you see, your spine has 2 primary curves. These are called the ‘Cervical Lordosis’ and the ‘Lumbar Lordosis’ which basically means the ‘neck curve’ and the ‘lower back curve’ (most commonly known as the lower back arch).
A normal structure has these two curves in their correct position and form like the left side of the picture shown.
The right side of the picture as you can see has a different structure. The neck curve looks straightened and it’s forward, the lower back curve also looks straightened and guess what happens to the mid back? It accentuates and you get that ‘bad posture’  or ‘granny hump’ look. Why does this matter and how can it impact your musculoskeletal health and your overall health?

Here is how it all works

When a bone in misaligned, it doesn’t have its proper motion and movement that it normally should have. Why is this important and what can a structural chiropractor do to improve your health? ⁣Well without a properly functioning joint, the muscles that surround that joint become useless, they also lose nerve connection to your brain. How? Let’s look at a couple of analogies to understand this. ⁣
1. What happens to the muscles when you break a bone and have to put a cast around it to wait for the bone to repair? The muscles waste away right? They get smaller and weaker. Why? Because without joint activity and movement, muscles don’t need to do anything.⁣
So this is how muscles around a misaligned joint that doesn’t move properly lose their strength. They become weak and are therefore less supportive for your structure, creating abnormalities in your structure⁣
and posture and without the muscle support you will damage joints, bursas, capsules, discs, nerves and all that’s within them. ⁣
2. Muscles and joint have mechanoreceptors that send information up to your brain (via your nerves) so that your brain can alter its control of the body / make it more appropriate and better.⁣
Without joint motion and muscle activity, these receptors also don’t work therefore the brain doesn’t have accurate information from the body therefore it does not control the body the best possible way. It’s use it or lose it for the brain, once it’s had a while of lack of proper connection to a part of your body, it will become more and more confused and creates more compensations in your body which causes tightness and stiffness in your muscles which can cause pain. Your pain may also be coming from repetitive trauma on your joints and all the structures within the joint because of lack of muscular support. ⁣

So at Revolution Chiropractic we take it up a notch

We probably.. in fact i’m willing to bet that we have the most thorough process of consultation and examination of any chiropractor in new zealand at least. Most chiropractors have pre-printed reports they run through with you to tell you what’s going on in your spine. They have pre-printed recommendations on your water intake, caffeine intake, exercises and so on. They do their consult, examination and adjustments in no more than 20 minutes and they’ll have your report done in 5-10 minutes. Thereafter your appointments will be anywhere between 3-5 minutes.
Okay… believe me, I KNOW how amazing chiropractic adjustments can be…so putting in the bare minimum effort gets your a long way and you look like you’re a god sent… what i’m saying here is not to downplay chiropractic at all… I mean I am in LOVE with chiropractic and what it does for us… but at Revolution Chiropractic we like to push chiropractic to highs that most chiropractors don’t bother doing so… it costs them time and money to do so… and quite frankly it’s not as profitable.

So what do we do that’s so different?

Firstly, we like to see the individual for a free consultation first and then decide if we can help and inform them how exactly we can help, including costs. This free consultation is 30 minutes long with one of our strutural chiropractors.
Only if you are a good candidate for structural corrective care and you want to fix your issues at their core, we go through to a complete structural examination which includes structural spinal analysis using specialised equipment and x-rays.
After analysing your postural photographs taken in our office and your X-rays in detail plus all the other information acquired during the examination we conduct a thorough report of diagnosis, rehabilitation and recommendations on various parts of your lifestyle such as sitting, standing, sleeping, nutrition, supplements, etc.
This process takes up anywhere between 30-90 minutes and your report is detailed to its’ core… it can be anywhere from 10-15 pages long.
We also adjust your spine specific to what’s going on in your structure to correct it as well as restoring your spinal curves to normal again using specialised rehabilitation equipment.⁣

We see all sorts of musculoskeletal and non-musculoskeletal conditions at Revolution

We see many people with neck or back pain and bulging or herniated discs that have gone through procedures like microdiscectomies previously who are back to square one a year or two down the road. (Micro-discectomy is surgery to remove herniated disc material that is pressing on a nerve root or the spinal cord). Upon a very detailed examination we find the cause of WHY your discs are herniating to start with and treat the actual CAUSE so that this cycle of herniation, microdiscectomy, herniation, bandage treatment stops.⁣
We also see individuals with pain and problems in other areas of their body such as shoulder pain, knee pain, ankle or foot pain, shin splints, pregnancy related issues… and there are always those people with things such as post concussion syndrome, dizziness and vertigo, TMJ dysfunctions (jaw pain), sinusitis and recurrent sinus infections, brain fog which we also help. ⁣Of course it is pertinent you see your structural chiropractor for any head or neck related injuries such as concussions and whiplash.

Injury Prevention and Chiropractic

Injury Prevention and Chiropractic

More and more people are becoming aware of how beneficial chiropractic care is when they have sustained an injury. However, what people may not be aware of is that chiropractic care can actually help prevent injuries. Injury prevention is important for all types of people, from elite athletes to elderly people. Being injured can slow us down from living our lives to our full potential. Here are some ways that chiropractic can help prevent injuries from occurring.

By making sure your structure is strong:

Chiropractic addresses specific joints within the body, usually within the spine, and makes sure they are functioning correctly. Malfunctioning of spinal joints can affect the overall structure of the spine and place excess stress in some areas. These areas of weakness can leave you more vulnerable to an injury than you would normally be. When chiropractors find and adjust these segments of the spine, your structure becomes much more strong and stable. A stable structure ensures that there aren’t weak spots left vulnerable to injury. While chiropractors usually deal with the spine, they are also trained in checking and adjusting extremities. They make sure that the structure of these is also strong and stable in order to minimize the chance of injury.

By improving your sense of body awareness and balance:

Chiropractors aren’t only affecting the spine, but also the nervous system that runs through it. A proper function of the spine allows the nervous system that runs through it to transfer messages between the brain and the body accurately. If the transfer works at its best, it allows your brain to receive the best possible information about where your body is in space. This helps improve balance, decrease clumsiness, and improve reaction times to the environment around you. This body awareness is beneficial to all types of people of all ages. It can help young children decrease clumsiness and minimize the chance of any accidents or injuries. It also improves the balance in the elderly, because falls are a major cause of serious injury. Finally, the athletes can benefit from better perceiving where their body is. This can result in the prevention of numerous injuries that come along with all different types of sport and exercise.

By increasing healing times:

A proper-working nervous system also allows your brain to better perceive what is happening within your body. This is extremely beneficial when it comes to injury prevention. Minor injuries can often get worse and turn into more serious injuries. When your brain is able to detect these little things easier, you become much more aware of your body. Minor injuries that may have gone unnoticed previously, you may now become aware of more easily. This allows you to take the proper precautions to let this heal properly before placing more stress on the injury, and aggravating it so it becomes more serious. On top of this having a well-functioning nervous system increases healing times. This means that minor injuries will heal much faster, reducing the amount of time that your body is left susceptible to further, more serious injuries.

Chiropractic and Wellbeing of the Elderly Population

Introduction

Chiropractic can benefit anyone at any age, as we all have spines and nervous systems that need to be looked after. Chiropractic can provide many benefits to people in the elderly population. Therefore, it can have a positive effect on many aspects of their lives. This is especially important as we have an aging population, and need to look after these members of our community. Here are 4 ways chiropractic can help have a positive effect on the wellbeing of the elderly population.

Balance

As we age our balance progressively worsens. This creates an increased risk of falling. Falling has more serious consequences as we age because our bodies gradually become more fragile. Falls are a major health concern in the elderly population. They can cause injury, loss of independence and quality of life, and in serious cases even death. Falls account for over 80% of hospital admissions for injuries in people over 65. Moreover, they are the leading cause of injury related death for this population. In addition, falling has a high health care cost associated with them, which is only going to increase with our aging population.

Chiropractic allows better communication between the brain and the body. This helps with balance and preventing falls in multiple ways. Firstly, it increases our reaction time which makes us more likely to be able to catch ourselves if we trip. Secondly, it allows us to more accurately know where our body parts are in space, which leaves us less vulnerable to falling. And thirdly, it increases our ability to integrate our senses from external factors and respond to them faster and more appropriately.

Pain

Chiropractic is probably most well known for its ability to assist with musculoskeletal issues and pain. And this is no different in the elderly population. They may have pain for different reasons such as injury from a fall, or due to the degeneration process. By restoring the proper joint biomechanics in the spine, the spine moves better and allows the muscles in these areas to relax. As a result, this often leads to less pain. Moreover, chiropractic allows better communication between the brain and the body, which allows the body to heal itself better and faster if there are any injuries there causing pain. As many older adults are on multiple medications, chiropractic is a great, natural way to reduce the need for painkillers for musculoskeletal issues and pain. As a result, this may lead to reducing the overall side effects someone may experience from taking multiple medications2.

Mobility

Chiropractic restores normal movement of spinal joints as well as extremities. As a result, this not only improves motion for that joint but also an overall range of motion for the whole spine/extremity. Importantly, elderly people are then more likely to be able to continue with activities that they enjoy doing e.g. gardening, walking, playing with grandchildren. Moreover, when we return normal motion to these joints, we also take the stress away from them. In addition, when we decrease the stress on these joints and improve movement, we are also slowing the degenerative process3.

Mental Health

When you combine all of the above points, this has an amazing impact on the overall quality of life of older adults. Importantly, when they have increased mobility and decreased pain, they are more likely to be able to keep exercising and doing things they enjoy. Moreover, remain independent. Remaining independent is very important to older adults and has extremely positive effects on their mental health. In conclusion, the longer they can remain independent, the better their mental health and overall wellbeing will be. Moreover, chiropractic helps improve quality of sleep, all contributing to improved mental health and quality of life4.

The Immune System and Chiropractic

What is the immune system?

The immune system is our natural defense against outside pathogens such as bacteria or viruses. It is constantly working to prevent us from getting sick or infected, or to help get us better as efficiently as possible if we do become infected. It can affect how often we get sick, how hard we are hit by sickness, and how long it will take to recover. When it does become infected by something, it keeps a record of this. So that it is better equipped to fight it if it ever returns again. The immune system contains many different parts. Including but not limited to: white blood cells, antibodies, skin bone marrow, spleen, lymphatic system, and the thymus. They all have their own role in preventing and fighting infection.

How can the immune system become weakened?

Some people are born with conditions that weaken their immune system. It can weaken from acquired diseases (such as HIV/AIDS), or through some types of medical treatment (such as chemotherapy)1. In addition, there are also lifestyle habits that can weaken our immune system such as prolonged stress, under or over-exercising, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and poor diet2.

How does chiropractic affect the immune system?

It is important to look at the lifestyle factors that may be weakening our immune system and modify these where possible. However, there are other ways we can help to strengthen our immune system. One of these ways is through chiropractic care. Chiropractic care is all about removing interference from the nervous system, which is caused by all the different stresses in our lives. When our nerve system is free of interference this allows our brain and our body to communicate more freely and accurately. If our brain and body are communicating well this allows the brain to be better. As a result, it is able to detect what is happening in the body, such as an infection, and to organize the necessary elements needed to fight this.

When the communication between the brain and the body has no interference, the brain can register what is happening faster. As a result, the body can start fighting any sickness or infection as soon as possible in order to minimize damage to the body and reduce the duration of sickness. Moreover, decreased nervous system interference also allows our brain and nervous system to better coordinate all body systems. When the immune and nervous system can coordinate their responses more efficiently this keeps our body more resilient and healthy. As a result, the more coordinated our immune and nervous systems, the more likely to beat sickness and infection fast, and with the least amount of damage to the body3.

A great example of chiropractic helping boost immune function the impact that chiropractors had during the Spanish Flu. The Spanish Flu (1918-1920) was one of the world’s worst pandemics, with somewhere between 20-50 million people dying4. While it was a devastating time in history, something amazing happened when those affected went to see their chiropractor. In a city in Iowa, it was shown that every 1 out of 15 of those infected that went to medical doctors died. However, only 1 out of every 866 patients that went to a chiropractor died. Moreover, there were 233 cases that medical doctors had given up on, and after chiropractic care all but 25 of these cases survived. As a result, this amazing feat led to many licenses in the US5!

This all comes down to the fact that chiropractic clears interference from the nervous system. In addition, they allow all systems of the body to function at their best, including the immune system. Chiropractic is extremely beneficial for anyone looking to boost their immune function – it saves lives!

Diabetes – Intro

BRIEFING:

Food is now in abundance for many of us. In fact, we have so much food that many of the unnecessary products are becoming staples. I’m sure there is one person that you know of replaces water with soda, fruits with sugary sweets, whole foods with processed foods and fresh meat with processed meat. These foods will surely lead to health complications later on in life. One of them would highly likely be diabetes.

What is diabetes? Diabetes is when there is too much sugar in your blood. This can be due to two reasons; congenital and lifestyle. Type 1 diabetes is due to congenital issues. This is an autoimmune issue that occurs when your insulin-producing cells are attacked by your immune system. Insulin is an important hormone that regulates blood sugar and without it our blood sugar levels will rise. So if there is a lack of insulin to begin with, there will be nothing that keeps it under control. Type 2 is due to consuming food with too much sugar. This causes one of two problems. Firstly, it may cause the body to not produce enough insulin. This is because the demand is too high and the body cannot make enough supplies. Secondly, it can cause the insulin to become more resistant. This just means that your body isn’t able to process the sugar as well as it should. Insulin is used to the amount of sugar and is feeling lazy so it will no longer be as sensitive as it once was.

cont.

So let’s talk about some early signs and symptoms of diabetes. Some early signs of diabetes can include frequent urination, increased thirst, and an increase in appetite. However, sometimes there may be no symptoms at all! So we must constantly monitor our blood to check for sugar levels and other problems. In severe cases of diabetes, slow healing of cuts and wounds, loss of sensation, blurry vision, and patchy skin. The one that I would definitely be careful of would be the slow healing of wounds. This is because it increases the likelihood of infection occurring.

So now we know what diabetes is, what is the reasoning behind it, and what the symptoms are, next time we’ll discuss some risk factors (hint: most likely from diet). Also, we’ll tell you some ways to prevent yourself from getting diabetes too!

Blue Light: The Good & The Bad

Every sort of screen emits blue light and how many hours do we spend sitting in front of a screen every day? We are looking at screens every day whether it is watching shows, scrolling through social media, or doing office work. By the end of the day, we probably spend a good 12-15 hours on a screen. As a result, we will definitely be affected by blue light somehow. So today we’ll break down some of the effects of blue light.

Pros

  • Blue light helps regulate our circadian rhythm. Blue light can be found in the sun. Every day we are woken up by blue light. It is what triggers us to wake up. Without it, we will be in hibernation most of the time.
  • Blue light stimulates alertness, memory and cognitive function. This is because blue light increases the speed of neuron growth and strengthens neuron connection in the hippocampus. As a result, we become more focused and retain information a lot easier.
  • Apart from brain growth, blue light also stimulates eye and vision growth. Children at a young age needs to be exposed to a moderate amount of blue light in order to for their eyes to grow. The key work there was MODERATE. Too much blue light can also be bad but we’ll touch on that later. Some studies show that too little blue light can actually stunt growth and can cause near sightedness.

Cons

  • Blue light decreases sleep quality. While blue light keeps us up it decreases melatonin production. Melatonin is a hormone created in the pineal gland that controls sleep cycles. Due to the shorter wave lengths from blue light, the body becomes more sensitive to it as a result, delta brainwaves which is induces sleep is also supressed.
  • Too much blue light can lead to eye strain. Human eyes are not very good at filtering out blue light due to the shorter wave length. Since the wave lengths are shorter, it scatters more than other colours making it harder to focus. At the same time it reduces contrast in other colours. As a result, our eyes need to work extra hard to filter out this out unnecessary colours thus leading to eye strains.
  • Finally, too much exposure of blue light may increase the likelihood of macular degeneration. Again due to the shorter wave length of blue light, it is easy for it to penetrate the retina (the inner lining at the back of the eye). This is where most of the light sensitive cells are located in the eye. Too much blue light can actually damage these cells. As these cells degenerate further, it can lead to permanent loss of vision.

Blue light is a natural source of light that can be found anywhere. This light is very important since it helps with waking us up, increasing brain function and growth. But due to technology and lifestyle we may be being overexposed. Too much of anything can be bad, with blue light it decreases sleep quality, lead to eye strains and may increase the likelihood of macular degeneration. There are a couple of ways to decrease the effects of blue light. One, spend less time in front of screen. Especially 30-60 minutes before you go to sleep so you can increase sleep quality. Second, wear glasses that filter out most of this light. This way your eyes will be less stressed. Remember blue light in moderation is good but too much of it can worsen your health.

The Importance Of Exercise: Balance

There are 4 types of exercise; strength, cardio (aka endurance), balance and flexibility. We have previously touched on strength and cardio training. The main topic this time is balance. Balance is extremely important for everyday life, it keeps our posture stable, keeps us upright and stops us from flopping all over the place.

The body and balance

Our body has a very smart way to maintain balance. Your balance is co-ordinated through 3 main aspects; eyes, feet and ears. Your eyes of course tells your brain where you are and how you are perceiving things. The feet acts as our proprioceptors. In other words they tell the brain how and where our bodies are positioned. Finally our ears keep our body in balance. Your ears consists of a part called the semi-circular ear canals and they are filled with tiny hairs. These tiny hairs in our ear help relay motion and gravity information to and from our brain. On a physical aspect, our core is what keeps us upright physically. By strengthening your core, you will gain more stability thus leading to better balance.

Most of balance actually comes from our core as well. Having a healthy strong core helps us balance and prevents injuries too. We have done plenty of videos on core exercises so head over to our instagram page to find some exercises. I would recommend you to work on your core 2-3 a week for around 15 mins each time.

How to improve

If you are doing a lot of strength training with weight, consider swapping out bars with dumbbells or kettlebells. By using dumbbells  or kettlebells you will engage your core more as each side will be functioning individually. This allows you to engage your core more so you can stay balanced while lifting weights. Another way you can train your balance is to include yoga or Pilates in your training. Yoga and Pilates trains your balance by staying different positions for a period of time while engaging your core muscles, legs and muscles that keep you up right. At the same time it helps your flexibility.

You don’t have to have a 6 pack to show that you have a good stable core. Just specifically work your core 2-3 times a week. Like mentioned previously we have made plenty of videos teaching you how to strengthen your core. Additionally, we have just made videos on exercises that help improve balance. Think about how you can change up your regular exercise routine to better your balance as well. Remember, balance is just as important as strength and cardio fitness. Having good balance can help you with injury and accident prevention.

Kids Balance Exercises: One Leg Stand

Kids Balance Exercises: One Leg Stand

Chiropractic care for your kids can greatly benefit their physical and mental development including improving their balance. Kids Chiropractic care is gentle, precise, and effective. Here’s a tip on how you can help your kids improve their balance with One Leg Stand.

Steps for One Leg Stand:

  • Stand on one foot and place your hands on your hips and balance for 5 seconds. Repeat on the other leg.
  • Focus on looking straight ahead at the wall, not at the ground!
  • Be able to do this for 10 seconds without wobbling or falling over

LEVEL 2: Do this with your eyes closed

The ability to stand on one leg is important. When walking, you spend about 40% of your time with one foot on the ground as the opposite leg is moving through the air. The single-leg stance is a simple, but very effective exercise for improving balance.

What’s Tech Neck And How It Affects Your Health

Posture

Tech neck is the term used to describe the neck pain and damage sustained from looking down at your cell phone, tablet, or other wireless devices too frequently and for too long. Children and teens are especially at risk for suffering symptoms of Tech neck. And it seems increasingly common. Recently, a patient came into my practice complaining of severe upper back pain. He woke up and was experiencing severe, acute, upper back muscle strain. I told him I believe the pain is due to the hours he was spending hunched over his cell phone.

Of course, this posture of bending your neck to look down does not occur only when texting. For years, we’ve all looked down to read. The problem with texting is that it adds one more activity that causes us to look down—and people tend to do it for much longer periods. It is especially concerning because young, growing children could possibly cause permanent damage to their cervical spines that could lead to lifelong neck pain and other major health issues such as:

Aches, fatigue, pain
Asthma
Disc compression
Early arthritis

Forward Head Posture (Tech Neck), Asthma and Heart Disease

One of the most prevalent and destructive imbalances has to do with the cervical curve. The natural curve in the vertebrae of the neck. When we lose the proper curvature of the cervical and lumbar curves, we lose as much as 50 percent of our spinal strength.

For every 2 cm that your head is held forward (rather than balanced properly over the body), it gains 5 kgs of weight. The muscles of your back and neck have to work that much harder to keep your chin off your chest and the muscles of your chin stay in constant contraction, compressing nerves and leading to headaches at the base of the skull or those that mimic sinus headaches.

This “forward head posture,” says University of California’s director of physical medicine and rehabilitation, Rene Cailliet, “can add up to 15 kg of abnormal leverage…” pulling “the entire spine out of alignment” and “may result in the loss of 30% of vital lung capacity.”

The curve of your cervical spine is referred to as “the arc of life” by neurosurgeons because these bones protect the brain stem. And are the thoroughfare for spinal nerves that affect every organ and function in the body.

Subluxation is the term for the compression and irritation of nerves because of misalignments of the spine. When the cervical curve is misaligned, the spinal cord stretches and shrinks in circumference, losing nerve conductivity.

Chiropractors make adjustments to the spine and help teach clients posture and habits that reverse these misalignments. Restoring the body’s natural functions and healing capabilities.

What Causes Forward Head Posture?

Forward head posture causes:
Computer use
TV watching
Video games
Backpacks
Trauma (Trauma leading to forward head posture can come in the form of car accidents, slips or falls, or even birthing trauma from forceps or vacuums.)

Nobel Prize recipient Dr. Roger Sperry says that “90% of the stimulation and nutrition to the brain is generated by the movement of the spine.” Only 10 percent of the brain’s energy goes into thinking, metabolism and healing, while 90 percent of brain energy goes into processing and maintaining the body’s relationship with gravity, Sperry demonstrated.

As forward head posture decreases lung capacity, it can lead to asthma, blood vessel problems and heart disease. The oxygen deficit affects the entire gastrointestinal system and can decrease endorphin production. This turns the perception of non-painful sensation into pain experiences, says Dr. Fishman.

A structural chiropractor can measure the curve of your “arc of life,” give you regular adjustments, lead you in spinal rehabilitation exercises, and teach you postural and working habits that will greatly improve your health and quality of life.
