Chiropractic is all about looking after the spine and the nervous system. This means that anyone with a spine and nervous system can benefit from chiropractic, and this includes children and babies! Many people are unaware that children can benefit from chiropractic care, as children don’t tend to have ‘back pain’. However, there is much more to chiropractic than assisting with neck and back pain. And the earlier someone gets under chiropractic care the sooner they can start seeing the benefits in their life.

 

What can Chiropractic Care affect?

While many people come to chiropractors to get relief from neck or back, there is actually much more what chiropractors do. Chiropractors feel for dysfunction in the spinal joints, and do specific adjustments in these areas in order to restore normal function. This can slow down the degenerative process, prevent injury, and minimize pain. Because the nervous system is so closely related to the spine the malfunction of any segment of the spine can impact the flow of information between the brain and the body. When chiropractors get the spine function correctly, they are also allowing the nervous system to function at its best. Because the nervous system controls every little thing in our body, it is very important to look after our nervous system.

 

Kids’ spinal development issues

Due to stresses from our daily lives, our spine can stop functioning properly. And children are not exempt from these stresses. Every child’s life begins with one of the biggest traumas we ever have to go through – birth. No matter how straightforward birth is, it still places a large amount of stress on the newborn’s spine and nervous system. Many births aren’t always straightforward and require interventions such as a Caesarean section or a ventouse. As children grow and learn to crawl and then walk, they will fall down thousands of times. While each fall may not hurt the child, the cumulative effect can place stress on their spines and stop them from working at their best.

 

Benefits of Chiropractic for kids

Children’s bodies and brains are radially growing and changing. Chiropractic can greatly benefit children as they physically and mentally grow. Because we are removing dysfunction from their spines, we allow their bodies to fully respond and recover to all their little bumps and falls. By making sure there is no interference to their nervous systems, we are ensuring that their brain can develop to its full potential. It also means that the brain can communicate effectively with their body in order to know exactly what is going on. This creates better body awareness which can help them heal when they do get hurt.

Some common childhood issues that chiropractic care can assist with include delayed milestones such as:

  • Crawling, walking, or other gross motor skills
  • Colic (crying and distress in an otherwise healthy baby)
  • Problems with latching, or feeding on one side
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Bedwetting, among many others.

When a child’s spine and nervous system are functioning without interference, the brain can better understand what is happening in order to make a change.

 

Conclusion

Some people may be wary of getting their baby or child under chiropractic care as they may have been adjusted themselves or seen an adjustment done on someone else. However, babies and children are not adjusted in the same way that adults are. Chiropractors are specially trained in assessing and adjusting young spines. There are many different techniques that can be used on children that are safe and gentle and use significantly less force than adjustments used for adults, however, they are still extremely specific and provide amazing results.

Even if your child doesn’t seem to have any issues, it is a great idea to get them under chiropractic care early in order to assist their growing brains and bodies and to ensure their spines are healthy to prevent issues later on in their lives.

The Birthing Process and Chiropractic

The birthing process is a very complicated process that puts a lot of stress on both the mother and the baby. Because birth is so complicated, numerous things can go wrong. However, chiropractic is an amazing tool for any expecting mother, that has benefits for both mum and baby. Before, during, and after labor, and helps provide a safe and comfortable birthing process. Here is how chiropractic can help at all stages of the birthing process.

Before Labour

It is important to get checked by a chiropractor from the beginning of your pregnancy, as being under chiropractic care allows your pelvis to comfortably expand and change in order to give space for your baby to grow. If the baby has room to grow comfortably this will allow them to be in the best position possible for when it is time to give birth1. However, some babies can sometimes end up in the wrong position for birthing – known as breech position.

Breech Babies

Most babies in the breech position need some type of intervention, such a a Caesarean section, to help them be born safely. There is a pregnancy specific chiropractic technique, called Webster technique, that focuses on balancing the pelvis, including pelvic muscles and ligaments. This can help take pressure off the uterus, and can result in the baby repositioning itself into the ideal position for birth taking away the need for extra interventions2.

During Labour

Because chiropractic balances the joints of the pelvis and gets the nervous system working at its best, this usually results in faster and easier births. This is due to a few reasons. As mentioned above, chiropractic care allows the baby to be in the best possible position for birth, it also makes sure that the mother’s pelvis is ready for giving birth. Because chiropractic clears interference from the nervous system, this allows the brain to be able to better control the uterus and cervix, allowing the birth process to happen faster and more smoothly3.

Chiropractic care and reducing labour time

Estimates show that women under chiropractic care, have on average a 25-30% shorter labour time than those who are not under chiropractic care4. When the labour can run without complications due to the baby’s position, this decreases the need for extra medical interventions, allowing for a safer and more comfortable birth for both mother and baby. Chiropractic also has an impact on pelvis floor muscles, giving them a better ability to relax when the pelvic floor muscles are at rest. These muscles are very important in giving birth. When these muscles are working properly, it increases the chances of being able to have a safe, natural vaginal birth5.

After Labour

Chiropractic is important for the mother both before and after giving birth. Because it equips her body to be able to bounce back to normal as quickly as possible. If there was for some reason some type of trauma during the birth, chiropractic increases the body’s healing capabilities, allowing the mother to heal as fast and effectively as possible4.

Even a safe, fast birth can still cause a lot of trauma and stress on the newborn baby’s system. It’s important to check after birth so chiropractors can find any areas of stress caused by the birthing process. Then remove them using extremely gentle and safe techniques, specific for very young children. From the moment babies are born, their brain and body start growing and adapting. Chiropractic clears their nervous system from any stress that may have been caused by the birthing process, which allows them to grow and function at their very best.

The Next Big Thing In Health

Perspective and Health

 

Once again another Covid-19 is dominating the news again. But did you know this is not the first time a deadly virus, flu, bacteria, or disease that has caused the world so much trouble? In recent history I can already name 5 deadly virus that has caused problems; the 1918 Spanish Flu, 1957 Influenza Pandemic, 2003 Sars, 2009 Swine Flu and 2012 Mers. Seems like in the last 100 years these problems have kept on arising and we have been extremely reactive to each situation. Of course, the medical team is doing a great job in finding constant cures and other ways to help the human body when we are affected by these nasty viruses. But surely, we can’t be so reactive to every situation that arises. Yes, I understand how quickly viruses mutate. So I believe, the next big thing in health will be how we can enhance our current health and be more preventative to prepare ourselves against the next big thing.

 

To prepare ourselves for the next big pandemic, there must be a shift in mindset in society. We must work on our inner wellness. To do that, I believe that education on good health habits should start at an early age. To increase inner health, ingrain a couple of ideas in early childhood so that they can be formed as habits. These ideas are simple; eating healthy, getting a good amount of regular rest, and being active as much as possible are a few simple ideas that can easily be implemented in healthcare education. I believe that after this lockdown, we should all be all looking at ways to improve our inner health. This may sound easier said than done, but hopefully, if everyone starts being more aware of their own health and take environmental issues seriously, to prevent future events like this to stop happening again.

Raising Healthy Children: Tip # 4 Immune System

Many of us have been led to believe that germs are the root of all evil. And that we should go to great lengths to avoid them…

Anti-bacteria hand creams, sprays, and wipes, fill our handbags and counters. Yet, compelling research tells us that we have gone too far. Some exposure to pets, dirt, and other children, for example, are vital for stimulating the immune system to work effectively. In experiments where we grow animals in completely sterile (germ-free) environments, their immune systems do not develop normally. In a conclusion, they develop severe immune diseases, including allergy and autoimmunity.

When our “microbiome” (our internal network of helpful and harmful bacteria) becomes imbalanced, our digestion, immune function, state of mind, and general health and wellbeing in time become compromised. Scientists now believe, an imbalanced microbiome to be one of the primary causes of several diseases and disorders. Such as:

  • Chronic infection
  • Inflammation
  • Autoimmunity
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Cancer
  • Neurological problems such as Alzheimer’s, autism, and schizophrenia.

The Canadian Medical Association Journal just a few months ago stated that “the disruption of the gut balance [is linked] to an increasing number of diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes, obesity, cancer, allergies, and asthma.”

Studies now tell us that exposure to dirt and germs is incredibly essential. We need regular exposure to bacteria and viruses to strengthen our immune system. In our own homes, among our own families, we want to take the opportunity to build up our immune systems.

Here are a few quick tips:

  • Letting children crawl on the floor is fine, playing in the dirt is a good thing; we encourage having family pets and sharing a spoon with your sister is, again, fine.
  • Cleaning away visible dirt or grime on any surface — sinks, floors, or door handles with thorough washing and cleaning products that are free of harsh chemicals — is usually enough without constant sterilizing. And also using disinfectants such as bleach (which probably kills everything in the air around it, too!).
  • Washing our hands with simple soap dislodges and removes surface particles without stripping everything on the skin. Antibacterial soaps kill both good and bad bacteria. They also strip the skin of the environment it needs to sustain good bacteria.
  • Be less concerned about germs but instead focus more on considering how strong is your child’s digestive power and immune system.

Raising Healthy Children: Tip # 3

Many parents lament that they can’t get their children to eat certain foods or meals that they prepare…

Despite their best intentions, many parents today arrive at a stand-of with their children; the children dictate what they will and won’t eat, and then the parents become distressed when their kids fall ill with frequent colds and flus, ear infections and asthma, to name but a few repercussions of poor diet. Or in ever-growing cases, children acquire seemingly mysterious behavioral disorders with long labels that require medication. Even then, the link is often not made between diet and health.

Sometimes it seems a whole lot easier to just give into children and throw into their lunchboxes that vegemite, peanut butter or jam sandwich, a packet of chips, or a cupcake. There is no doubt that this type of approach to lunches is quick, simple, and easy. But the question is:

Is life simple and easy when we have hyperactive, angry or unwell children?

We cannot pour soft drinks or additives onto a potted plant and expect it to survive… the same applies to our body.

There is a direct relationship between what we eat and our quality of life and health. In Lunchbox Solutions, I discuss a variety of approaches to retraining fussy eaters.

Every family must negotiate guidelines and boundaries around many facets of lifestyle and behavior, but there are none as important as diet, because what your children eat has an ENORMOUS IMPACT on the whole family. It’s exhausting when they are chronically unwell when they are irritable and friends and family don’t want to spend time with them. So I’d encourage you to pick your battles and be clear that the “food battle” is one you want to win!

Even if your child appears quite healthy, remember that the impact of poor food choices may have a long-lasting effect on their health as adults. The cumulative damage of refined sugars and processed foods can be an enormous contributor to illnesses including diabetes and heart disease. It is our role as guardians to empower our family with proactive and positive habits. 

Since my boys were very little they learned that they need to eat primarily wholesome foods and at times “sometimes foods.” It is vitally important that children learn how they can strengthen digestive power through eating foods that are as close to their natural state as possible including a wide variety of fresh organic vegetables and fruits, raw or organic nuts and seeds, beans, whole grains; you get the idea.

Foods should nourish and heal the body. Eating foods in their most natural state ensures we receive the highest nutritional content. Whole foods contain naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, enzymes, essential fatty acids, amino acids and more.

Consuming food shouldn’t be a toxic event. By eating “whole foods” we also help our family to reduce their intake of harmful chemicals. Such as preservatives, synthetic nutrients, and other additives that are considered non-foods (which are added to most all processed foods.)

If you can — try to eat organic foods whenever possible. This will help to ensure you avoid harmful toxins such as antibiotics, synthetic hormones, pesticides, herbicides, GMO’s, and synthetic fertilizers. Purchasing organic food is not a luxury but rather an integral step in securing our health. Pollutants in our modern environment—for example, pesticides, heavy metals, herbicides and fumigants—have been linked to abnormalities in behavior, perception, cognition, and motor ability during early childhood, even when exposure is at so-called harmless levels.

The goal is to teach the child to make these good decisions themselves

Where possible encourage children to help you shop and prepare meals and take the opportunity to highlight the pros and cons of different foods and false foods.

Encourage your children from a young age to also be open to having supplements or “vitamin boosts” from time to time. For example, smoothies and homemade juices are a great way to add multi-mineral powders and probiotics into their weekly diet. High-quality probiotics can provide the necessary bacteria for a healthy gut, and they are an essential aid to digestive health for all children — I would recommend taking these a few times a week. It’s also a great habit to encourage them to randomly have zinc and vitamin C powder drinks or multi-mineral drinks particularly if they have been really busy or had a few late nights.

Children Eating More Fruit, but Fruit and Vegetable Intake Still ...

Raising Healthy Children: Tip # 2 How?

Whenever we want to set ourselves a new goal we have to know where we are starting. This allows us to look back in 6 and 12 months time and celebrate how far we have come. It’s hard work being a parent and it’s harder again to a parent who’s committed to healthy habits and rituals. So, it’s important to take stock and appreciate your efforts.

So let’s begin how to audit.

Q: How Much Sugar Do You Each Consume Daily

Without realizing it, most adults and children eat refined sugar for breakfast, lunch and dinner via processed cereals and grains. Most of us consume an average of 53 kg of sugar each year (approximately
29 teaspoons of added and natural sugar each day), and 75 percent comes from the packaged and convenience products we eat and drink.

I’d encourage you to investigate the health risks associated with eating too many sugars (in Lunchbox Solutions I discuss the dangers of sugars and outline what are healthier ways to sweeten recipes, so that’s a great place to start).

There are several reasons should we should avoid sugars, including that they raise our insulin levels. Insulin is a hormone
that our pancreas produces and its main function is taking up blood glucose (sugar) into the cells for energy. High insulin levels are thought to contribute to multiple health issues but for this post where we are focused on raising the health status of our children — let’s keep to three main issues.

Key issues with sugar

1 High insulin levels can depress the immune system weakening our ability to fight disease. This occurs because white blood cells need stacks of vitamin C to kill bacteria and viruses. So our white blood cells work to accumulate
and store vitamin C within the cell. The problem is that vitamin C and glucose have similar chemical structures so they then compete to enter the white blood cells. Guess what happens when we have lots of glucose in our blood from eating lots of foods that contain processed sugars? Glucose wins and our white blood cells become deficient in vitamin C compromising our ability to fight bugs.

2 Too many sugars also upset the integral balance of good and harmful bacteria in the gut. When we consume too many sugars we can create an overgrowth of harmful yeasts and bad bacteria which override our helpful “disease fighting” helpful bacteria — hindering our immune system.

3 Refined sugars also provide us with no vitamins or minerals. In order for them to be metabolized, they draw on the body’s reserves of vitamins and minerals, depleting our body’s nutrients.

ACTION: Start a food diary and observe just how much sugar find there way into your daily diet. Here’s a tip for when looking at products and packaging — sugars tend to be any ingredient ending in “ose” — sucrose, fructose, dextrose, lactose etc. Try it — it will shock you!

Drastically reducing sugar (initially this is not an easy task) not only lightens the load on your child’s immune system it also allows your children to get off the ‘blood-sugar rollercoaster’.

Here’s another tip — cutting back sugar … life just gets better. Sugar highs and lows, make us all irritable and grumpy.

Audit Cont.

Q: How many processed foods are in your pantry, fridge and child’s lunch box?
-Literally count the number of packaged items and take an audit. If a food item has more then 5 or 6 ingredients you can bet it’s refined, altered and damaged. If you can’t pronounce the names of the ingredients in the food item, mostly likely it’s full of chemicals. I’d encourage you to become a food critic and learn what all those numbers and complex sounding ingredients really mean. Q: How many pieces of fresh fruit and vegetables are you all currently consuming each day?

-Daily consistency is key here.

Q: How many glasses of water do you drink?

Q: What sort of water do you drink?
-And I don’t mean the wet kind. One of the simplest and most important things you can do is invest in a water filter to protect your family against chemically-treated water. Most of our drinking water today contains chlorine and chlorination by-products, as well as numerous other contaminants. Drinking good quality water via a high quality filter system — promotes detoxification, enhances nutritional uptake and ensures optimal hydration.

Help your children develop the habit of drinking water throughout the day rather than juices and soft drinks. A mere two per cent drop in our body’s water supply can trigger signs of dehydration: fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math and difficulty focusing on smaller print, such as a computer screen. Many children are frequently dehydrated, suffering with concentration issues, constipation and digestive problems.

Q: How many prescriptions has your child had in the last twelve months and over their lifetime?
-With regular chiropractic care and addressing these other tips for raising healthy children, many parents delight in no longer relying on antibiotics and instead being able to rely on their child’s own immune strength.

Q: How many sessions of sweaty exercise would each family member perform each week?
-Ideally each of us should be raising our heart rate 5 times a week.

Q: How many harmful chemicals are in your personal care and cleaning products?
-Source brands that are genuinely wholesome — free of nasty chemicals and toxins which are readily absorbed through the skin and tax our body and its defence system.

It can be a “reality slap” to take an audit and look at where you currently sit along the “healthy” and “not so healthy” scale. Where you sit on the “fresh” and “disastrously preserved” scale. Remember though that every moment we make choices and have the opportunity and capacity to influence both our child’s — short and long-term health.

In the next five blogs, I will reveal the top 5 tips on raising the wellness of children!

But first, I want to address an important question.

When it comes to raising healthy children, how would a chiropractor and a medical professional proceed?

There are two significant differences that exist between the ‘chiropractic wellness’ approach and the ‘medical approach’ to health as each sets a different goal and a different course of action.

Firstly the medical profession views the human body as a conglomerate of chemical and mechanical functions so that when a health challenge arises, doctors look specifically at the problem area and take a “we’ve got to fix it” approach. This might be through eradicating germs that they credit with creating disease or through offering drugs or surgery. The focus is to reduce symptoms and to address health issues in a disease-oriented model.

Wellness chiropractors see the body as a whole, acknowledging that the body works together. So that when we compromise, or tax one area of our body, other areas can, in time, become vulnerable.

Most of us are aware that our nervous system controls and coordinates every function of the body. Still, we may not appreciate that there a significant number of stressors that accompany our modern lifestyle, which taxes our spine and nervous system. These lifestyle factors move a body out of balance and threaten our health. Chiropractors ask questions like, “How can we help the body recreate balance and good function?” and “What part of this person’s environment is taxing their health?” Chiropractors take a vitalistic view of the human body, respecting the body’s innate or inner intelligence and adjust the spine to stimulate the body’s natural ability to recreate balance, order, and healing.

While current health issues are addressed, wellness chiropractors are most excited about helping clients become proactive about all facets of their health.

Kids Balance Exercises: Hop

Kids Balance Exercises: Hop

To finish up the week for ‘kids balance’ week, we will be jumping around a bit, but you will have to do it with one leg!

Steps:

1. Stand on one leg and tuck the other leg up behind your bottom and hold it with the opposite hand.
2. Hop on the spot 5 times.
3. Hop 5 times and turn to the left each hop.
4. Hop 5 times and turn to the right each hop.

Concentrate on:

Keeping your spine nice and tall and looking straight ahead, not down at your feet.

What is balance and coordination? Why is your kids balance important?

Balance is the ability to maintain a controlled body position whilst performing a task, whether it is stepping up onto a kerb, sitting at a table, walking the balance beam. We need to maintain controlled positions during static (still) & dynamic (moving) activities.

What is Static balance?

The ability to hold a stationary position with control (e.g. “Freeze” or “statue” games).

What is Dynamic balance?

The ability to remain balanced while engaged in movement (e.g. running or bike riding).

Why are balance and coordination important? Why is your kids balance important?

Balance and coordination allows the child to be involved in the sports with a reasonable degree of success. Age appropriate balance aids fluid body movement for physical performance (e.g. walking a balance beam or playing football).

Being involved in sport is helpful is great for maintaining self regulation as well as building a social network and having a sense of belonging in a community. It can also help children develop controlled body movement during task performance. This can save energy therefore limit fatigue.

Kids balance is important as with good balance and coordination there is less likelihood of injury. How? The child is likely to have better postural reflexes when needed (e.g. putting hands out to protect themselves when they  fall off their bike). It also allows appropriate posture for table top tasks and at fine motor tasks.

??This is a step up from last week’s tight rope walk. This week you have to cross your arms over your chest so you can’t use your arms to balance!

STEPS for Tight Rope Walking:

1. Walk forward along the line with your feet as close together as possible, making sure your heel touches the toe as you step forward.
2. Make sure your head is looking up, not at your feet!
3. Walk ten paces forward on the tight rope then ten backward without falling over.

Now we will make the balance and reach exercise a bit harder! Chiropractic care for your kids can greatly benefit their physical and mental development including improving their balance. Kids Chiropractic care is gentle, precise, and effective. Here’s a tip on how you can help your kids improve their balance.

STEPS to Balance:

1. Start on all fours.
2. Reach your LEFT ARM and RIGHT LEG out straight, hold for 10 seconds, relax it down.
3. Now, balance your RIGHT ARM and LEFT LEG out straight, hold for 10 seconds, relax it down.

CONCENTRATE ON: keeping your body still and not leaning over or letting your shoulders drop when you do the exercise. Be sure to hold the exercise for 10 seconds.
