Chiropractic & Breastfeeding

For many mum and babies breastfeeding can be a real challenge.

We know that about 80-90% of mum try to breastfeed at birth but by one week of age as few as half of mums are still exclusively breastfeeding. This figure continues to drop with only about 1% of mum exclusively breastfeeding when baby is 6 months old, which is the recommended time we should exclusively breastfeed for.
There are of course many reasons why mums give up on this, from sore nipples to inadequate milk supply, or baby having issues with latching to suckling. All too often these problems lead to too much pain, or even breast infection and ultimately and understandably mum giving up on breastfeeding because it just gets too hard.

This is a real shame, because we know that it is really important for babies health. We know that babies who are breastfed are less likely to suffer from ear infections and tummy bugs, they’re even less likely to develop asthma and other conditions that can be life threatening.
It just goes without saying that nature knows best and that breastfeeding is the optimal form of nutrition for infants.

So if someone is having issues with breastfeeding, what can they do about it? luckily help is available.

The small muscles around the spine aren’t able to do this so their brains have to guess what’s going on and therefore may not be controlling the lower back in an ideal way. which can damage the back further.

Ways to Increase Endorphins

Don’t we all like to be happy all the time? During this time, I feel it would be a good opportunity to share some hope and bring some joy while we are locked in our own house! The main hormone that triggers happiness in our body is endorphin. So this week, let’s talk about a couple of natural (and legal) ways to release endorphins in our body.

 

  1. I’m pretty sure we’ve all hit a low point in our lives before, whether it’s a terrible break up, someone passing away or when you’ve lost all hope. During those times we may have stuffed ourselves with our favourite food. Eating is often a go to way for people to cheer up during these hard times. That is because eating your favour meal triggers your brain to release feel good hormones like endorphins! But don’t go overboard as we know there are bigger health complications due to obesity!
  2. This is one that I personally do whenever I’m not feeling at 100%. That is exercise. Exercise is a great way for you to forget about all your problems for a short period of time. That is because all forms of exercise triggers the body to release endorphin. This can be anything from cardio training, weight training, HIIT training or even sports. Perhaps it is a good time to release all the negative energy and use it as fuel to get fit and feel good at the same time.
  3. There is something special about Mother Nature. Nature literally mother’s us when we are down and helps us feel better. Going out doors is a great way to release endorphin. Especially, in a place which is nice and empty. Although it is difficult in this time right now, a simple method is to go out in your garden and enjoy the sunshine. That’ll have to do for the time being!
  4. LOL literally laugh out loud. Why do we laugh? Usually something happy or funny happens. When we laugh out loud, our brain releases so much endorphins that it can even increase our pain threshold. Use this opportunity to binge watch on a comedy like Friends or Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Those shows will crack you up.

 

I have just listed 4 ways to raise endorphin levels while we are all being quarantined. These are difficult times but if we all just stick together as a nation, we are bound to go through this tough patch! Hopefully, these 4 tips will help you cheer your day up and bring you hope!

Kids Balance Exercises: Hop

To finish up the week for ‘kids balance’ week, we will be jumping around a bit, but you will have to do it with one leg!

Steps:

1. Stand on one leg and tuck the other leg up behind your bottom and hold it with the opposite hand.
2. Hop on the spot 5 times.
3. Hop 5 times and turn to the left each hop.
4. Hop 5 times and turn to the right each hop.

Concentrate on:

Keeping your spine nice and tall and looking straight ahead, not down at your feet.

What is balance and coordination? Why is your kids balance important?

Balance is the ability to maintain a controlled body position whilst performing a task, whether it is stepping up onto a kerb, sitting at a table, walking the balance beam. We need to maintain controlled positions during static (still) & dynamic (moving) activities.

What is Static balance?

The ability to hold a stationary position with control (e.g. “Freeze” or “statue” games).

What is Dynamic balance?

The ability to remain balanced while engaged in movement (e.g. running or bike riding).

Why are balance and coordination important? Why is your kids balance important?

Balance and coordination allows the child to be involved in the sports with a reasonable degree of success. Age appropriate balance aids fluid body movement for physical performance (e.g. walking a balance beam or playing football).

Being involved in sport is helpful is great for maintaining self regulation as well as building a social network and having a sense of belonging in a community. It can also help children develop controlled body movement during task performance. This can save energy therefore limit fatigue.

Kids balance is important as with good balance and coordination there is less likelihood of injury. How? The child is likely to have better postural reflexes when needed (e.g. putting hands out to protect themselves when they  fall off their bike). It also allows appropriate posture for table top tasks and at fine motor tasks.

3. Walk ten paces forward on the tight rope then ten backward without falling over.

STEPS to Balance:

1. Start on all fours.
2. Reach your LEFT ARM and RIGHT LEG out straight, hold for 10 seconds, relax it down.
3. Now, balance your RIGHT ARM and LEFT LEG out straight, hold for 10 seconds, relax it down.

CONCENTRATE ON: keeping your body still and not leaning over or letting your shoulders drop when you do the exercise. Be sure to hold the exercise for 10 seconds.

Here’s a tip on how you can help your kids improve their balance with Snow Angel.

STEPS for Snow Angel:

1. Have your child lie on the ground face up with arms by their side and legs together.
2. Have them close your eyes.
3. As the parent you will tap an arm or a leg to indicate for your child to move it outwards then bring it back into their body.
4. You can tap an arm, or a leg, or both at the same time. And voila, snow angel.

 

LEVEL 2: Instead of tapping the limb you will tell them “left arm” or “right leg”.
