Fruits – should we eat them? And why not?

Introduction

Fruits come in all shapes and sizes and colors. Some are sour, some are sweet and some just smell terribly bad. Now they are full of sugar in the form of fructose but they also contain plenty of other nutrients in them. So today we’ll run through some of the benefits of consuming fruit on a regular basis and whether it should or should not be a part of your regular diet.

Fruits – nutrients, fiber, antioxidants, minerals, and other benefits

So fruits contain so many nutrients. Fibre, antioxidants, and minerals are just some of the benefits found in fruit. Of course, each fruit differs from each other but you can find these generally in all of them. Fibers are only in whole fruits. Whole fruits are fruits that have not gone through processing. So canned fruit and preserved fruit are unlikely to contain much if any fiber at all. Fiber is used to help us process food in the colon. It softens stools making it easier to pass through. But in order for it to work adequately, there must be enough water intake otherwise the effects will reverse. Antioxidants are another word for vitamins. There are 13 different types of vitamins out there and depending on the fruit, it’ll contain different vitamins. Vitamins are essential nutrients that cannot be naturally made in the human body. As a result, the only way to get them is through food. Vitamins assist the proper function of the body from the nervous system to the immune system. Depending on the vitamin it can help with different aspects of the body. Often vitamins are the stimulants that the body needs to create a certain chemical in the body like hormones and white blood cells. Fruits also contain plenty of minerals. Minerals are chemical elements that support proper functioning. Just like vitamins, they help the body grow and function properly. Minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and zinc can help with bone growth, nervous system, and immune system respectively. Again the types of mineral present are totally dependent on the fruit.

Fruits – for everyone?

Even though fruit is super nutritious, it may not be for everyone. They are very high in sugar and carbohydrates. It is this sugar that makes it extremely delicious and sweet. However, if you are on a ketogenic diet it may not be for you. This is because this diet requires the body to use its energy reserve for the body to lose weight. Carbohydrates are the first source of fuel and once piece of fruit can contain up to 20 grams of carbohydrates. If the body is full of sugars, it will not use the reserve energy first. Secondly, if you are diabetic fruits may not be the best option for you too. Although fruit contains less sugar than soft drinks, lollies, and other sugary sweets, it still contains a decent amount. To get diabetes under control, the best is to have less or completely cut out sugars.

Conclusion

Fruits are the perfect snacks! They are relatively low in calories, delicious (well most of them), and extremely nutritious. They are full of fiber, antioxidants, and minerals which are crucial for the body to maintain function. However, if you are diabetic or on a ketogenic diet, I would recommend you to stay away or minimize their consumption.

What is Osteoporosis and how to prevent it

Introduction

Human aging is inevitable. While we are aging, many things start to deteriorate. It is an outcome that cannot be avoided. Our hair starts falling out, we start to have less collagen and our skin becomes wrinkly. Memory starts to get worse and worse, we start to lose control of our bowels and we gradually become weaker. These are some of the effects of aging. Another big part of aging is osteoporosis. Today I’ll go through what is osteoporosis. And even though we cannot avoid any effects of aging, we can have some measures that delay the onset and consequences.

What is osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is when the quality or density of the bone diminishes. This causes the bone to become brittle and weak. As a result, we end up being more susceptible to fractures. The health of bones is dependant on two cells; osteoclast and osteoblast. The osteoclast is the cell that takes bone away and osteoblast are the cells which lay down bones. Throughout our lives, both of these cells work in harmony. However, as we age they do not work as well together as they should. This results in the osteoclast removing more bone than osteoclast forming bone. Thus causing bone density to decrease.

Collagen and calcium to fight the osteoporosis

Our bones are living tissue that can grow to different sizes. Just like other parts of our body, our bones need nutrients and stimulation to grow. One nutrient that can promote healthy bones is collagen. Our bones are actually made up of the protein called collagen. It provides the body with the effect of cushioning and strength. This protein can also be found in our skin, muscles, ligament, and tendon. Unfortunately, once we hit the age of 25 the production of collagen starts to decrease. Naturally, our bones start becoming weak due to the lack of this protein. Alongside collagen, calcium is also used to strengthen bones. Calcium solidifies the structure in our bone so it becomes stronger and less brittle. In order to strengthen the structure of our bones, we need to increase or keep up our collagen and calcium intake. This can be through natural sources such as different types of meats, beans, eggs, and dairy products.

The effects of weight training on the osteoporosis

Another way to delay the onset of osteoporosis is to exercise, more specifically weight training. Weight training can help with the prevention of osteoporosis. Every time we strength train, we actually stress the bone by pulling and tugging it through the lengthening and shortening of the muscles. So once we put stress on the bone, it stimulates the bone-forming cells into action causing more bone growth. It is strongly encouraged to do some sort of weight training at a young age as once we discover we have osteoporosis it is always too late for recovery.

Conclusion

Aging is something that we cannot prevent, however, we can delay the onset and minimize the effects it’ll have on our body. One consequence of aging is osteoporosis. Although we can’t prevent it from consuming plenty of food with high amounts of collagen and protein and doing regular resistance exercise can help us minimize the effects of osteoporosis!

The Birthing Process and Chiropractic

The birthing process is a very complicated process that puts a lot of stress on both the mother and the baby. Because birth is so complicated, numerous things can go wrong. However, chiropractic is an amazing tool for any expecting mother, that has benefits for both mum and baby. Before, during, and after labor, and helps provide a safe and comfortable birthing process. Here is how chiropractic can help at all stages of the birthing process.

Before Labour

It is important to get checked by a chiropractor from the beginning of your pregnancy, as being under chiropractic care allows your pelvis to comfortably expand and change in order to give space for your baby to grow. If the baby has room to grow comfortably this will allow them to be in the best position possible for when it is time to give birth1. However, some babies can sometimes end up in the wrong position for birthing – known as breech position.

Breech Babies

Most babies in the breech position need some type of intervention, such a a Caesarean section, to help them be born safely. There is a pregnancy specific chiropractic technique, called Webster technique, that focuses on balancing the pelvis, including pelvic muscles and ligaments. This can help take pressure off the uterus, and can result in the baby repositioning itself into the ideal position for birth taking away the need for extra interventions2.

During Labour

Because chiropractic balances the joints of the pelvis and gets the nervous system working at its best, this usually results in faster and easier births. This is due to a few reasons. As mentioned above, chiropractic care allows the baby to be in the best possible position for birth, it also makes sure that the mother’s pelvis is ready for giving birth. Because chiropractic clears interference from the nervous system, this allows the brain to be able to better control the uterus and cervix, allowing the birth process to happen faster and more smoothly3.

Chiropractic care and reducing labour time

Estimates show that women under chiropractic care, have on average a 25-30% shorter labour time than those who are not under chiropractic care4. When the labour can run without complications due to the baby’s position, this decreases the need for extra medical interventions, allowing for a safer and more comfortable birth for both mother and baby. Chiropractic also has an impact on pelvis floor muscles, giving them a better ability to relax when the pelvic floor muscles are at rest. These muscles are very important in giving birth. When these muscles are working properly, it increases the chances of being able to have a safe, natural vaginal birth5.

After Labour

Chiropractic is important for the mother both before and after giving birth. Because it equips her body to be able to bounce back to normal as quickly as possible. If there was for some reason some type of trauma during the birth, chiropractic increases the body’s healing capabilities, allowing the mother to heal as fast and effectively as possible4.

Even a safe, fast birth can still cause a lot of trauma and stress on the newborn baby’s system. It’s important to check after birth so chiropractors can find any areas of stress caused by the birthing process. Then remove them using extremely gentle and safe techniques, specific for very young children. From the moment babies are born, their brain and body start growing and adapting. Chiropractic clears their nervous system from any stress that may have been caused by the birthing process, which allows them to grow and function at their very best.

Sleep Quality: Chiropractic Bed Mattress

Sleep Quality and Bed Mattress… Are They Linked? And what is the best Chiropractic Bed Mattress out there?

Sleep is the most vital way for humans to recover. That’s why it is important to get a good amount of sleep as well as getting good quality sleep. When it comes to sleeping, two pieces of equipment can drastically change the quality of sleep as well as protecting your spine and neck. The two pieces are the pillow and the mattress. You need a good quality chiropractic bed mattress and pillow!

In the last blog we mentioned that the function of a pillow is to support the neck and upper back as well as providing comfort. The best way to choose a suitable pillow is dependent on one’s sleeping posture. This time we are going to sink in to the other piece of equipment, the mattress.

Plain & simple, a good chiropractic bed mattress will support your spine whilst you’re sleeping on it.

Just like the pillow, the mattress’s function is to provide the spine support and comfort at the same time. So the spine consists of 3 parts; cervical, thoracic and lumbar.

The Cervical Spine

The cervical spine which is also the neck is supported by the pillow. I’ve explained the physiological shape function of the cervical spine in the previous blog so go check that out here.

The Lumbar Spine

The lumbar spine is the spine that’s located in the low back. It’s has a similar ‘reverse C’ curve just like the cervical spine. The main function of the lumbar spine is to distribute stress and to bear the weight of the body. This is why out of all the vertebrae, the ones in the lumbar spine are the largest.

The Thoracic Spine

The thoracic spine is what fills the gap between the cervical spine and the lumbar spine. It is made up of twelve segments, located in the mid back and has an opposite curvature to the lumbar and cervical spine. As well as serving as the transition between the two primary curves (the lumbar and the cervical curves) it also hold the rib cage which protects all the organs.

When searching for a mattress we must find the one which best supports the curvatures of the spine. This way it maintains the health of the spine allowing it to function properly and decrease the likelihood of spinal degeneration and pain.

When to get a new mattress and how do you find the best Chiropractic bed mattress?

So firstly, how do you know it’s time for a new mattress? Well generally a good quality mattress lasts for around 7-12 years. But keep in mind that most mattress manufacturers design mattress’s that last for 10 years. A lot of the times deciding when to invest in a new mattress depends on the budget and individual pain tolerance. I am not suggesting that you should only consider changing mattress once you feel pain. But on the safe side I think 10 years is a good time to ponder about getting a new mattress. Another possible reason as to why you should change mattress is if your mattress has started to change shape. If you can see a part of the bed have sunk in around 1 to 1.5 inches it’s also an indication for a mattress change. Finally, if you are feeling pain, it’s time to treat your spine to a better mattress.

Choosing the perfect Chiropractic bed mattress!

Choosing the perfect mattress is dependent on your sleep posture. However it is a little less complicated than choosing a pillow because there is only one height for the mattress. When choosing a mattress, match your sleeping posture with the firmness of the mattress. This is because it helps keep your spine in a neutral stress free position for the duration of your sleep.

Back Sleepers

For back sleepers, choosing a slightly firmer mattress will be the ideal option. This is because it prevents sagging of the hip. This allows you to be in proper alignment for the duration of the entire sleep.

Side Sleepers

For side sleepers it is best to choose a mattress which is slightly softer than firm (not soft and not even medium, but not as firm as you would have it if you’re sleeping on your back). This way, there will be less pressure in your shoulders and hip. The softer mattress will also sink in allowing your spine to keep a straight line with the rest of your neck. If you know you move around during your sleep, try to find the dominant position and cater mostly to that.

What Chiropractic bed mattress do we suggest for your spine?

We suggest looking into the ABCA Mattress.

Choosing the right sleeping equipment is pivotal in maintaining your spinal health and having better quality sleep. We spend around a third of our lives in our bed, whether it’s sleeping, gaming, reading or watching television. So it’s important to invest in something that’ll keep you comfortable as well as keeping you healthy. So next time when you hunt for a new mattress take note of your sleeping pattern to find the perfect mattress for you.

Good Sleep Quality: Pillow

The importance of good quality sleep and what we can do to improve our sleep quality

We all know the importance of good quality sleep. It can help us with our physical and mental health. Sleep quality can be improved through many means; supplements, timing and habits are a few of them. Those things can often be implemented without much cost. But there are two things that are just as important but can be overlooked. They are pillows and mattress. Both pillows and mattress play a very important role in determining the quality of sleep. Additionally, it is one of the best investments to prevent future back and neck issues. In this first of the two part sleep series, we are going to dive into looking at the most suitable pillow for you.

Function of a pillow & sleep quality

The functions of a pillow is to provide support and comfort. Our necks are made up of 7 vertebrae. These 7 vertebrae form a backward ‘C’ curve in our neck known as the cervical lordosis. The curve acts like a spring and distribute stress. Quite often when this curve is altered symptoms such as aches, pains and numbness will begin to show. When a good pillow is utilised, it can help support this curve so it maintains its physiological function and structure. This curve can be maintained by a pillow through two paths; the softness and the shape of the pillow. The way that one chooses the right pillow is dependent on the sleeping posture.

Choosing the right pillow to improve your sleep quality

Side sleepers

For side sleepers, it is recommended that the pillow that is a little higher. This is because when one is lying on the side the shoulder gives extra height. The higher pillow fills the gap between the neck and shoulders so the neck will not stay bent when you are a sleep. It is also important to go for a slightly firmer pillow if for side sleepers. This ensures that the neck is well supported and the head doesn’t sink in, leaving the neck bent sideways the entire night.

Back sleepers

For people who sleep on their backs choosing a slightly lower pillow would be the more beneficial choice. The reason for this is if the pillow is too high, the head will also be too high leaving the neck in a constantly flexed state. This means for the duration of your sleep, it’ll be placed exactly the opposite the revered ‘C’ shape that it’s meant to be. Overtime, the structure of the neck will shift causing the development of neck and upper back pain. A lower pillow allows the spine neck and the rest of the spine to stay in a more neutral state. Ideally, a softer pillow would also be more suitable for back sleepers too. This is because it can fill up the back between the upper back, the neck and the shoulders giving more even support around the entire cervico-thoracic junction.

Stomach sleepers

For the rare stomach sleepers, just don’t. Try readjust and retrain your sleeping posture. Sleeping on the stomach keeps your head rotated in one direction for the duration on your sleep (unless you have a cut out in the mattress like chiropractic tables). This creates a negative pattern in the neck. But if changing sleeping postures isn’t an option, use the slimmest pillow that can be found.

Pillow recommendation!

We spend around 8 hours each day which equates to around 121 days a year in bed sleeping. During that time, plenty of things in our body can change if we don’t keep it well structured. Besides from internally increasing your sleeping quality, your sleeping gear is just as important! So take care of your neck because you only get one and find the most suitable pillow!

We suggest and stock these 2 pillows to our client:

The Complete Sleeper

The ABCA Adjustable pillow

Shoulder Bursitis and Chiropractic

Revolution Chiropractors are highly regarded Auckland Chiropractors. We are here to help with chronic bursitis, tendonitis, back or neck pain, headaches and migraines, and more. We offer a free consultation so that you have an opportunity to see if we can help and it also allows us to figure out if and how we can help. At Revolution Chiropractic we really care about getting you better and that is our number 1 priority.

What is shoulder bursitis? Can Chiropractic Help?

A bursa is a fluid-filled sac that sits between bone and the tendons, muscles, and ligaments in a joint. The bursa acts as a cushion to allow the joints to move in a gliding motion and to reduce any friction between these surfaces. Humans have more than 150 bursae throughout their bodies, and if one of these becomes irritated or inflamed it is called bursitis.

Shoulder Bursae

The shoulder itself has 6 bursae, more than any other joint in the body. If any of these bursae become inflamed it is called shoulder bursitis. There are many things that can cause a shoulder bursa to become inflamed such as strenuous or repeated physical activity, trauma to the shoulder, calcium disposition. Other things that can cause bursitis include infection, underlying conditions such as gout, rheumatoid arthritis, or ankylosing spondylitis.

Symptoms and Commonality

Shoulder bursitis tends to happen more commonly in people over 30 years old, and happens more often in females. Symptoms of shoulder bursitis include tenderness and pain, heat, redness, swelling, stiffness, and restricted movement. This can affect a person’s sleep, and ability to perform their normal daily tasks, especially if it involves any overhead movement of the arms.

Medical Treatment of Shoulder Bursitis

Standard medical treatments for shoulder bursitis can include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Advil or ibuprofen, or steroid injections. While these can be effective in reducing pain and inflammation, they don’t address what caused the bursitis in the first place, and can cause side effects.

Chiropractic Treatment of Shoulder Bursitis

Prevention:

The first way chiropractors can help with shoulder bursitis is by preventing it from ever happening in the first place. Chiropractors are able to adjust the shoulder and the areas of the spine around the shoulder, in order to keep this area strong and stable. This leaves this area much less vulnerable to injury. When everything in this area is aligned and moving properly, this decreases stress on all parts of the shoulder joint, including the bursa. This means that the bursa is significantly less likely to become irritated and inflamed.

Assessment:

Chiropractors are able to do a number of different physical exam tests to rule in and rule out different conditions that could be causing the pain. They are also able to refer out for tests such as x-rays or lab tests in order to see if there is an underlying condition. This thorough examination helps pinpoint exactly what is causing the pain and discomfort. This allows the chiropractor to provide the most specific care tailored to this condition and to provide the best care possible.

Treatment:

Once your chiropractor has concluded that you have shoulder bursitis, they will begin treatment in order to help heal this condition. They will most likely start with adjusting the areas of the spine surrounding the shoulder, the shoulder itself, and the rest of the spine. This creates more stability which will allow the shoulder to start healing. A structural chiropractor will also provide lifestyle advice that will help the inflammation in the shoulder to go down.

When the inflammation in the shoulder has decreased, chiropractors can then start adjusting the shoulder to make sure it is aligned and moving properly. This decreases friction and pressure in the shoulder and allows the shoulder to heal faster.

Chiropractic is a safe, natural, and effective way of assisting the body to heal, without the side effects. Structural Chiropractors focus on treating the cause of the issue, not just the symptoms.

Pregnancy and Chiropractic

What changes does the body go through during pregnancy and how can chiropractic care help?

Pregnancy is a beautiful thing as you are growing a brand new human inside of you. However, while this is happening, it causes a lot of changes in your own body too. Different changes happen throughout different parts of your pregnancy and will differ from mother to mother, as no two pregnancies are the same. While these will be different for everyone, these are some of the changes you can expect as you progress through your pregnancy.

First trimester in pregnancy

It is very common during early pregnancy to feel very fatigued and low on energy, as your body adapts to all the changes it is going through. It’s also common to experience some nausea and vomiting due to the pregnancy hormones, these may also cause some emotional symptoms. You will likely need to urinate more as the baby starts growing and starts pressing on your bladder. Heartburn, constipation, and lightheadedness are all common in the first trimester. You will also start noticing skin, breast, vaginal, and stomach changes.

Second trimester in pregnancy

Most women have a lot more energy in the second trimester than they do in the first trimester, and are less likely to experience nausea and vomiting. Your stomach will continue to grow as your baby does. Your skin will continue to change. You may start experiencing pain in your legs due to the growing baby placing pressure on nerves and blood vessels. You may also start to experience pain in your back, hips, and pelvis. This can be because of the pressure your growing belly is putting on these areas, and because your ligaments start to relax to allow your pelvis to move in order to be ready for childbirth. You may also experience some stomach pain as the muscles and ligaments supporting your uterus stretch.

Third trimester in pregnancy

It’s normal to start to feel fatigued again. You will feel your baby start to move more and are likely experience some swelling throughout your body due to slower blood circulation and fluid retention. Some women experience numbness and tingling in your arm and legs due to increased pressure on the nerves throughout your body. You will likely still experience the same types of pain as you did in the second trimester.

How can chiropractic assist me through my pregnancy journey?

As you can see above your body goes through numerous changes as you go through your pregnancy journey. It is important to give your body as much support as you can throughout this time, and chiropractic is a safe and natural way to assist your body to be as strong and healthy as it can be while you are growing a baby inside of you. There are many different chiropractic techniques that can be utilised for the pregnant body, and all chiropractors are trained in how to provide care specific for a pregnant person. Here are just some of the ways that chiropractic can assist you on your pregnancy journey.

1. Lower back pain

As your stomach grows this changes your posture, your weight bearing, and the way you walk. All of this puts stress on the joints of the lower spine, which can sometimes result in lower back pain. Chiropractic is able to get those joint moving and functioning properly, which decreases the stress on them, and regularly results in less pain.

2. Balance pelvis

The ligaments of the pelvis relax and the pelvis expands as the baby grows. This however can sometimes cause weakness and pain in the hips and pelvis. Chiropractic makes sure all of the joints are moving and functioning well, so as they move and change they are still strong, stable, and balanced. This can decrease pain levels and allows the pelvis to safely expand to allow room for the baby to grow and move into the best position possible.

3. Abdominal pain

Abdominal pain during pregnancy is usually caused by stretching of the ligaments that are attached to the uterus, as the uterus expands to accommodate the growing baby. This tends to cause cramping and discomfort. There are specific chiropractic techniques, such as Webster technique, that help to relax these ligaments to ease pain and cramping as they stretch.

4. Decrease pain killers

Anything that the mother ingests, the baby will also take into their system. Chiropractic has been shown to remove up to 85% of pain symptoms that pregnant people experience, thus reducing the need for painkillers, and decreasing the baby’s exposure to these medications while in the womb.

5. Increase nervous system function

Chiropractic is all about removing interference from the nervous system so that it can work at its best. As the nervous system is the master controller of all body systems, including the reproductive system, chiropractic care allows the body to function at its best while it is going through all the changes of pregnancy. This is why people notice other benefits other than those mentioned above, such as increased energy and less heartburn, and why chiropractic is extremely beneficial in all stages of pregnancy.

5 Reasons to go to the Child Chiropractor

Are you a parent and want to know how a child Chiropractor can improve your child’s posture, overall health and well being?

No parent wants to see their children in pain or constantly sick, but it does happen from time to time.  Children occasionally get headaches, suffer from allergies, get earaches, have back pain and most have terrible postures.  Basically, the list is endless.  As a parent, you know that children are like magnets to injuries, pain, and illness.  Although most are minor, care should be sought, but where should you turn?  Instead of heading to your child’s GP, head to a local chiropractor for chiropractic care.  Why?

1 – A Child Chiropractor can Safety Treat Your Child

Chiropractic care is gentle, natural and non invasive.  A child chiropractor knows and has several tools and techniques to adjust your child’s spine ever so gently. For that reason, it is safe.  If your child experiences pain and discomfort, their primary care physician is likely to suggest over-the-counter pain relievers or prescribe prescription medication.  This may work, but the pain usually returns.  Why?  They only mask the problem.  Yes, some forms of pain and discomfort may disappear on their own with time and self-care, but there may be a more serious underlying issue.  You will not know unless you turn to a chiropractor.  Their job is to treat the pain by going directly to the source and fixing the problem.

Chiropractic care involves manual, hands on, therapy.  Since medications are not prescribed and the hands provide treatment, it is safe for individuals of all ages, including children.

2 – A Child Chiropractor Can Treat a Wide Range of Problems

Many adults mistakenly believe that chiropractors only treat spinal, back, and neck problems.  Yes, this is their specialty, but more is offered.  For example, did you know that a chiropractor can treat and lessen the onset of earaches and ear infections?  They can.  Blocked draining pathways cause most ear infections.  Chiropractic adjustments are used to open up those pathways and promote the proper flow of fluid.  Basically, if your child is experiencing pain, no matter how often or severe, a chiropractor can provide relief and that relief is usually long-lasting.

3 – It Is Easy to Find a Child Chiropractor

If you are unfamiliar with chiropractic care, you may have not given any thought to the offices in your area.  You may have driven past one each day on the way to work.  A standard google internet search can find you a local chiropractor. Be sure to check out their google reviews. Call and schedule an appointment for your child.  It really is as easy as that!

4 – The Benefits of Chiropractic Care for Your Child

There are many benefits to chiropractic care.  As previously stated, medications are not prescribed.  Treatment is natural and safe.  It is also long-lasting, as chiropractors do not mask the pain, they treat it.  As a parent, this should be very important.  Successful chiropractic care can allow your child to return to their happy normal self.  Reduced pain and increased mobility means more fun and less suffering even into their adulthood.

Potential benefits of Chiropractic care for babies and kids:

  • Encourages good neural plasticity (brain and nerve development).
  • Supports overall health and well being.
  • Helps strengthen immunity and potentially reduce the incidence of colds, ear-aches and general illness.
  • Assists with colic and Irritable Baby Syndrome.
  • Helps with asthma, breathing difficulties and allergies.
  • Encourages good spinal posture.
  • Helps improve concentration.
  • Assists with behavioural disorders.
  • Helps alleviate digestive problems.
  • Assists with bed-wetting and sleep issues.

Check out the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association website and the articles below for some great information.

5 – Some Health Insurance Policies Cover Chiropractic Care

It is no secret that raising kids is expensive.  Add in the cost of medical care, and the overall cost soars.  Luckily, many insurance providers extend coverage for chiropractic care.  If your family is not covered by medical insurance, there are still benefits to seeking care.  Just look for a chiropractor with affordable rates or one who is willing to set up a flexible payment plan.

Migraines and Chiropractic

What are Migraines? Can a Chiropractor Help?

Migraines are a neurological condition that affects up to 15% of the population. They are categorised as a severe headache that usually only occurs on one side of the head along with other symptoms including nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and noise. Migraines can be a seriously debilitating condition, as they can be so severe that they stop you from being able to perform your normal daily activities or work, and can last from hours to days.

Migraine Triggers

There are many different triggers that can cause a migraine to come on. Because of the large number of possible triggers it can be hard to pinpoint what causes migraines for each individual person, making it hard to prevent them from occurring. Possible triggers can include stress, caffeine, hormonal changes, food, alcohol, genetic predisposition, head injury, and muscle tension.

Migraines & Medication

There is no one cure for migraines, and the aim of medical treatment is generally to relieve the symptoms as soon as they start, and to try and prevent future attacks. Classical medical treatments include different types of medication and avoiding the triggers that cause the migraines in the first place. Generally a mix of medication and changing lifestyle factors is used, and effectiveness of treatments differ from person to person.

How Can Chiropractic Help With Migraines?

While classic medical treatments work for some people, there are numerous reasons that people can’t or don’t want to take medicine that may be prescribed to them for their migraines. Some people can’t take the medication, as it clashes with medication they need to take for other preexisting conditions they have. Others may have tried many different medications and found that none of them work for them. There will also be many people looking for a more natural treatment that doesn’t have the same side effects that medications have. Many people will be looking for a natural treatment to help ease the stress and pain caused by migraines.

Chiropractic care assists in the treatment of migraines in many different ways:

  1. Chiropractic care reduces stress and tension within the spine, and thus reduces tension in the surrounding muscles. As tight neck and back muscles are a major cause of headaches and migraines, this is a great way of preventing and treating the cause of migraines. Rather than trying to mask the symptoms when they appear.
  2. It improves the movement in the joints of the spine and body thereby strengthening the muscles supporting them. This helps to reverse the compensations and allow real healing to occur.
  3. It can improve the function of your nerves and nervous system. By re-aligning the spine the nervous system can function at its best and allow the body and the brain to effectively communicate. This decreases irritation of nerves that may be sending pain signals to the brain, improves the healing potential of the body.

Chiropractic has been shown to be at least equally as effective as current medication used for treating migraines, without the same negative side effects. It also focuses more on treating the cause of the migraines, rather than the symptoms. Thus chiropractic is a safe and effective alternative for anyone suffering from migraines.

Is Chiropractic Just for Back & Neck Pain?

Chiropractic Care, is it just about back and neck pain or is there more to it?

Chiropractic care can help with many things other than your back and neck pain. So, what is Chiropractor care exactly? Read on to find out.

The goal of Chiropractic care is to enhance your body’s function via the nervous system via the spine. Chiropractic care is about improving the motion of the joints of the spinal column (vertebrae) and therefore improving the nervous system. Your Chiropractor can also improve the motion of the joints of the rest of the body if needed.

The spine has two main functions:

(1) to provide support & allow movement

(2) to house & protect your spinal cord/nerves

The function of the nervous system:

The nervous system controls the function of every cell/tissue/organ in your body. Messages are transmitted from your brain, down your spinal cord, across exiting nerves to a particular body part; and then back up to your brain again.

These messages can be interrupted by spinal misalignments and this can affect and lower the function of the body part they are innervating.

A great deal of our clients visit us for wellbeing and maintenance check ups. Similar to how you may visit your dentist to have your teeth checked. You can visit a Chiropractor to have your spine checked and to prevent problems and damage.

Chiropractic Care - Misalignment

So why should I care about misaligned joints?

When your joints (any joint) are misaligned, they cannot move optimally. When a joint does not move optimally, 3 things happen:

1. The stabilising muscles that support that joint become lazy and weak. How?

Just like having a cast on your arm or leg, without moving the joints for just 1-2 months you will see a huge reduction of muscle tone and strength.

2. Nerve connection to that part of the body diminishes.

As the joints and muscles lose their movement and strength, the brains ability to send information to that part of the body also diminishes. Why? The brain uses the receptors in these joints and muscles to function correctly therefore with a lack of motion and activity, the brain can’t do its job properly. It’s use it or lose it for the body, brain and nerve connections.

3. Damage and degeneration (osteoarthritis) occurs.

More specific to the spine, without proper movement of the joints and strength of the muscles of the spine, the spinal curves lose their most functional shape and instead of acting like springs to distribute everyday forces, all the forces go onto the bones and discs of the spine and cause degeneration, damage/injury and other dysfunctions to occur. Note: this can happen anywhere in the body and in any joint.

Why is muscle strength important? (more specifically the deep stabilising muscles)

The deep stabilising muscles and their strength and activity are important because when they are not supporting a joint properly a whole host of problems can arise.

These muscles keep the joints in their proper position… so when they are weak:

a) The joint is not getting any support.
b) It’s not in its optimal position.
c) Keeps locking up and lacks proper movement.
d) The muscles keep getting weaker.
e) The cycle keeps getting worse over time.
f) Creates damage inside the bones, joints, discs and nerves.

This weakness and instability within the deep stabilising muscles also creates tightness and stiffness in and around the bigger muscles around the body such as the chest, shoulders, lower back, buttock and even arms and legs, creating a whole chain of improper movement and stress through the body.
