The Birthing Process and Chiropractic

The birthing process is a very complicated process that puts a lot of stress on both the mother and the baby. Because birth is so complicated, numerous things can go wrong. However, chiropractic is an amazing tool for any expecting mother, that has benefits for both mum and baby. Before, during, and after labor, and helps provide a safe and comfortable birthing process. Here is how chiropractic can help at all stages of the birthing process.

Before Labour

It is important to get checked by a chiropractor from the beginning of your pregnancy, as being under chiropractic care allows your pelvis to comfortably expand and change in order to give space for your baby to grow. If the baby has room to grow comfortably this will allow them to be in the best position possible for when it is time to give birth1. However, some babies can sometimes end up in the wrong position for birthing – known as breech position.

Breech Babies

Most babies in the breech position need some type of intervention, such a a Caesarean section, to help them be born safely. There is a pregnancy specific chiropractic technique, called Webster technique, that focuses on balancing the pelvis, including pelvic muscles and ligaments. This can help take pressure off the uterus, and can result in the baby repositioning itself into the ideal position for birth taking away the need for extra interventions2.

During Labour

Because chiropractic balances the joints of the pelvis and gets the nervous system working at its best, this usually results in faster and easier births. This is due to a few reasons. As mentioned above, chiropractic care allows the baby to be in the best possible position for birth, it also makes sure that the mother’s pelvis is ready for giving birth. Because chiropractic clears interference from the nervous system, this allows the brain to be able to better control the uterus and cervix, allowing the birth process to happen faster and more smoothly3.

Chiropractic care and reducing labour time

Estimates show that women under chiropractic care, have on average a 25-30% shorter labour time than those who are not under chiropractic care4. When the labour can run without complications due to the baby’s position, this decreases the need for extra medical interventions, allowing for a safer and more comfortable birth for both mother and baby. Chiropractic also has an impact on pelvis floor muscles, giving them a better ability to relax when the pelvic floor muscles are at rest. These muscles are very important in giving birth. When these muscles are working properly, it increases the chances of being able to have a safe, natural vaginal birth5.

After Labour

Chiropractic is important for the mother both before and after giving birth. Because it equips her body to be able to bounce back to normal as quickly as possible. If there was for some reason some type of trauma during the birth, chiropractic increases the body’s healing capabilities, allowing the mother to heal as fast and effectively as possible4.

Even a safe, fast birth can still cause a lot of trauma and stress on the newborn baby’s system. It’s important to check after birth so chiropractors can find any areas of stress caused by the birthing process. Then remove them using extremely gentle and safe techniques, specific for very young children. From the moment babies are born, their brain and body start growing and adapting. Chiropractic clears their nervous system from any stress that may have been caused by the birthing process, which allows them to grow and function at their very best.

The Next Big Thing In Health

Perspective and Health

Once again another Covid-19 is dominating the news again. But did you know this is not the first time a deadly virus, flu, bacteria, or disease that has caused the world so much trouble? In recent history I can already name 5 deadly virus that has caused problems; the 1918 Spanish Flu, 1957 Influenza Pandemic, 2003 Sars, 2009 Swine Flu and 2012 Mers. Seems like in the last 100 years these problems have kept on arising and we have been extremely reactive to each situation. Of course, the medical team is doing a great job in finding constant cures and other ways to help the human body when we are affected by these nasty viruses. But surely, we can’t be so reactive to every situation that arises. Yes, I understand how quickly viruses mutate. So I believe, the next big thing in health will be how we can enhance our current health and be more preventative to prepare ourselves against the next big thing.

To prepare ourselves for the next big pandemic, there must be a shift in mindset in society. We must work on our inner wellness. To do that, I believe that education on good health habits should start at an early age. To increase inner health, ingrain a couple of ideas in early childhood so that they can be formed as habits. These ideas are simple; eating healthy, getting a good amount of regular rest, and being active as much as possible are a few simple ideas that can easily be implemented in healthcare education. I believe that after this lockdown, we should all be all looking at ways to improve our inner health. This may sound easier said than done, but hopefully, if everyone starts being more aware of their own health and take environmental issues seriously, to prevent future events like this to stop happening again.

Pregnancy and Chiropractic

What changes does the body go through during pregnancy and how can chiropractic care help?

Pregnancy is a beautiful thing as you are growing a brand new human inside of you. However, while this is happening, it causes a lot of changes in your own body too. Different changes happen throughout different parts of your pregnancy and will differ from mother to mother, as no two pregnancies are the same. While these will be different for everyone, these are some of the changes you can expect as you progress through your pregnancy.

First trimester in pregnancy

It is very common during early pregnancy to feel very fatigued and low on energy, as your body adapts to all the changes it is going through. It’s also common to experience some nausea and vomiting due to the pregnancy hormones, these may also cause some emotional symptoms. You will likely need to urinate more as the baby starts growing and starts pressing on your bladder. Heartburn, constipation, and lightheadedness are all common in the first trimester. You will also start noticing skin, breast, vaginal, and stomach changes.

Second trimester in pregnancy

Most women have a lot more energy in the second trimester than they do in the first trimester, and are less likely to experience nausea and vomiting. Your stomach will continue to grow as your baby does. Your skin will continue to change. You may start experiencing pain in your legs due to the growing baby placing pressure on nerves and blood vessels. You may also start to experience pain in your back, hips, and pelvis. This can be because of the pressure your growing belly is putting on these areas, and because your ligaments start to relax to allow your pelvis to move in order to be ready for childbirth. You may also experience some stomach pain as the muscles and ligaments supporting your uterus stretch.

Third trimester in pregnancy

It’s normal to start to feel fatigued again. You will feel your baby start to move more and are likely experience some swelling throughout your body due to slower blood circulation and fluid retention. Some women experience numbness and tingling in your arm and legs due to increased pressure on the nerves throughout your body. You will likely still experience the same types of pain as you did in the second trimester.

How can chiropractic assist me through my pregnancy journey?

As you can see above your body goes through numerous changes as you go through your pregnancy journey. It is important to give your body as much support as you can throughout this time, and chiropractic is a safe and natural way to assist your body to be as strong and healthy as it can be while you are growing a baby inside of you. There are many different chiropractic techniques that can be utilised for the pregnant body, and all chiropractors are trained in how to provide care specific for a pregnant person. Here are just some of the ways that chiropractic can assist you on your pregnancy journey.

1. Lower back pain

As your stomach grows this changes your posture, your weight bearing, and the way you walk. All of this puts stress on the joints of the lower spine, which can sometimes result in lower back pain. Chiropractic is able to get those joint moving and functioning properly, which decreases the stress on them, and regularly results in less pain.

2. Balance pelvis

The ligaments of the pelvis relax and the pelvis expands as the baby grows. This however can sometimes cause weakness and pain in the hips and pelvis. Chiropractic makes sure all of the joints are moving and functioning well, so as they move and change they are still strong, stable, and balanced. This can decrease pain levels and allows the pelvis to safely expand to allow room for the baby to grow and move into the best position possible.

3. Abdominal pain

Abdominal pain during pregnancy is usually caused by stretching of the ligaments that are attached to the uterus, as the uterus expands to accommodate the growing baby. This tends to cause cramping and discomfort. There are specific chiropractic techniques, such as Webster technique, that help to relax these ligaments to ease pain and cramping as they stretch.

4. Decrease pain killers

Anything that the mother ingests, the baby will also take into their system. Chiropractic has been shown to remove up to 85% of pain symptoms that pregnant people experience, thus reducing the need for painkillers, and decreasing the baby’s exposure to these medications while in the womb.

5. Increase nervous system function

Chiropractic is all about removing interference from the nervous system so that it can work at its best. As the nervous system is the master controller of all body systems, including the reproductive system, chiropractic care allows the body to function at its best while it is going through all the changes of pregnancy. This is why people notice other benefits other than those mentioned above, such as increased energy and less heartburn, and why chiropractic is extremely beneficial in all stages of pregnancy.

Pregnancy - Chiropractic

5 Reasons to go to the Child Chiropractor

Are you a parent and want to know how a child Chiropractor can improve your child’s posture, overall health and well being?

No parent wants to see their children in pain or constantly sick, but it does happen from time to time.  Children occasionally get headaches, suffer from allergies, get earaches, have back pain and most have terrible postures.  Basically, the list is endless.  As a parent, you know that children are like magnets to injuries, pain, and illness.  Although most are minor, care should be sought, but where should you turn?  Instead of heading to your child’s GP, head to a local chiropractor for chiropractic care.  Why?

1 – A Child Chiropractor can Safety Treat Your Child

Chiropractic care is gentle, natural and non invasive.  A child chiropractor knows and has several tools and techniques to adjust your child’s spine ever so gently. For that reason, it is safe.  If your child experiences pain and discomfort, their primary care physician is likely to suggest over-the-counter pain relievers or prescribe prescription medication.  This may work, but the pain usually returns.  Why?  They only mask the problem.  Yes, some forms of pain and discomfort may disappear on their own with time and self-care, but there may be a more serious underlying issue.  You will not know unless you turn to a chiropractor.  Their job is to treat the pain by going directly to the source and fixing the problem.

Chiropractic care involves manual, hands on, therapy.  Since medications are not prescribed and the hands provide treatment, it is safe for individuals of all ages, including children.

2 – A Child Chiropractor Can Treat a Wide Range of Problems

Many adults mistakenly believe that chiropractors only treat spinal, back, and neck problems.  Yes, this is their specialty, but more is offered.  For example, did you know that a chiropractor can treat and lessen the onset of earaches and ear infections?  They can.  Blocked draining pathways cause most ear infections.  Chiropractic adjustments are used to open up those pathways and promote the proper flow of fluid.  Basically, if your child is experiencing pain, no matter how often or severe, a chiropractor can provide relief and that relief is usually long-lasting.

3 – It Is Easy to Find a Child Chiropractor

If you are unfamiliar with chiropractic care, you may have not given any thought to the offices in your area.  You may have driven past one each day on the way to work.  A standard google internet search can find you a local chiropractor. Be sure to check out their google reviews. Call and schedule an appointment for your child.  It really is as easy as that!

4 – The Benefits of Chiropractic Care for Your Child

There are many benefits to chiropractic care.  As previously stated, medications are not prescribed.  Treatment is natural and safe.  It is also long-lasting, as chiropractors do not mask the pain, they treat it.  As a parent, this should be very important.  Successful chiropractic care can allow your child to return to their happy normal self.  Reduced pain and increased mobility means more fun and less suffering even into their adulthood.

Potential benefits of Chiropractic care for babies and kids:

  • Encourages good neural plasticity (brain and nerve development).
  • Supports overall health and well being.
  • Helps strengthen immunity and potentially reduce the incidence of colds, ear-aches and general illness.
  • Assists with colic and Irritable Baby Syndrome.
  • Helps with asthma, breathing difficulties and allergies.
  • Encourages good spinal posture.
  • Helps improve concentration.
  • Assists with behavioural disorders.
  • Helps alleviate digestive problems.
  • Assists with bed-wetting and sleep issues.

Check out the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association website and the articles below for some great information.

5 – Some Health Insurance Policies Cover Chiropractic Care

It is no secret that raising kids is expensive.  Add in the cost of medical care, and the overall cost soars.  Luckily, many insurance providers extend coverage for chiropractic care.  If your family is not covered by medical insurance, there are still benefits to seeking care.  Just look for a chiropractor with affordable rates or one who is willing to set up a flexible payment plan.

Is Chiropractic Just for Back & Neck Pain?

Chiropractic Care, is it just about back and neck pain or is there more to it?

Chiropractic care can help with many things other than your back and neck pain. So, what is Chiropractor care exactly? Read on to find out.

The goal of Chiropractic care is to enhance your body’s function via the nervous system via the spine. Chiropractic care is about improving the motion of the joints of the spinal column (vertebrae) and therefore improving the nervous system. Your Chiropractor can also improve the motion of the joints of the rest of the body if needed.

The spine has two main functions:

(1) to provide support & allow movement

(2) to house & protect your spinal cord/nerves

The function of the nervous system:

The nervous system controls the function of every cell/tissue/organ in your body. Messages are transmitted from your brain, down your spinal cord, across exiting nerves to a particular body part; and then back up to your brain again.

These messages can be interrupted by spinal misalignments and this can affect and lower the function of the body part they are innervating.

A great deal of our clients visit us for wellbeing and maintenance check ups. Similar to how you may visit your dentist to have your teeth checked. You can visit a Chiropractor to have your spine checked and to prevent problems and damage.

Chiropractic Care - Misalignment

So why should I care about misaligned joints?

When your joints (any joint) are misaligned, they cannot move optimally. When a joint does not move optimally, 3 things happen:

1. The stabilising muscles that support that joint become lazy and weak. How?

Just like having a cast on your arm or leg, without moving the joints for just 1-2 months you will see a huge reduction of muscle tone and strength.

2. Nerve connection to that part of the body diminishes.

As the joints and muscles lose their movement and strength, the brains ability to send information to that part of the body also diminishes. Why? The brain uses the receptors in these joints and muscles to function correctly therefore with a lack of motion and activity, the brain can’t do its job properly. It’s use it or lose it for the body, brain and nerve connections.

3. Damage and degeneration (osteoarthritis) occurs.

More specific to the spine, without proper movement of the joints and strength of the muscles of the spine, the spinal curves lose their most functional shape and instead of acting like springs to distribute everyday forces, all the forces go onto the bones and discs of the spine and cause degeneration, damage/injury and other dysfunctions to occur. Note: this can happen anywhere in the body and in any joint.

Why is muscle strength important? (more specifically the deep stabilising muscles)

The deep stabilising muscles and their strength and activity are important because when they are not supporting a joint properly a whole host of problems can arise.

These muscles keep the joints in their proper position… so when they are weak:

a) The joint is not getting any support.
b) It’s not in its optimal position.
c) Keeps locking up and lacks proper movement.
d) The muscles keep getting weaker.
e) The cycle keeps getting worse over time.
f) Creates damage inside the bones, joints, discs and nerves.

This weakness and instability within the deep stabilising muscles also creates tightness and stiffness in and around the bigger muscles around the body such as the chest, shoulders, lower back, buttock and even arms and legs, creating a whole chain of improper movement and stress through the body.

What else is Chiropractic care good for?

As I write this, I have helped people with:

-Vertigo (a specific type of dizziness that’s debilitating)
-Other types of dizziness and lightheadedness
-Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
-TMJ pain (jaw pain)
-Headaches
-Migraines
-Cluster headaches
-Sinus problems
-Pregnancy related problems
-Breach baby/babies (turning the baby)
-Infant related problems such as colic, feeding issues, sleep issues, digestive issues, developmental delays.
-Childhood disorders such as bed wetting, improving concentration, behavioural disorders.

Other more obvious conditions:

-Shoulder pain
-Frozen Shoulder
-Hip pain
-Knee pain
-Elbow Pain
-Ankle/foot pain
-Wrist/hand pain
-Postural issues

Is Chiropractic Treatment a Life Long Commitment?

Chiropractic Treatment, is it a lifelong commitment?

The answer to that question is really up to your preference and how you prioritise your overall health. Is Chiropractic treatment and keeping your health well maintained one of your priorities? Or are you too busy to care about your health?

Chiropractic treatment is a great way to take care of your body. Whether it’s getting you out of pain, creating better posture or just improving your overall wellness and health, it is a great for you in many ways.

Most chiropractors design a care plan that starts with more frequent visits and it usually tapers down over a period of several weeks or months depending on the severity of your condition. However, do they ever tell you to stop coming in for chiropractic treatment? If not; are they just wanting your money or do they genuinely care about your health?

Structural Chiropractic Treatment

If you’re looking to correct the underlying problems in your spine and set up a strong and healthy foundation, you need structural chiropractic treatment to optimise the shape and curves of your spine and this is not going to happen in 1 or 2 visits. Although amazing things can and do happen in just a few chiropractic treatments, it does not mean that your problem is completely fixed at its core. It’s physiologically impossible for your body to go through such changes in such a short period of time.

For example, most people know how long it usually takes to restructure the teeth. A lot of people either have had braces in their lifetime or have known someone that has. Restructuring the teeth usually takes 18-24 months! Applying this to your spine, it would be outrageous to think a chiropractor can fix your back in just a couple of visits. Remember, symptom relief is NOT the same is fixing the problem.

Initial Chiropractic Treatment

The reason why Structural Chiropractors see their clients more frequently for a few weeks or months to start with is because the areas of the spine that have misalignments, have been in a misaligned position for days, weeks, months or even years so the muscles and ligaments around these joints are extremely weak. To build the strength of these muscles and ligaments again, we have to keep adjusting those joints and with doing do, there’s immediate muscle activation around them which makes them strong again which keep your spine well supported so everything can heal from within.

Strengthening muscles takes time. Everybody knows this. Have you ever gone to the gym and done one workout and felt like you have gained your maximum strength?

Protective Chiropractic Treatment

After the initial phase of chiropractic treatment, you’ll be shown your results and your chiropractor will give you recommendations on what they think is the best way to go forward but they will also tell you that it’s up to you to decide. Do you want to stop your chiropractic treatment and let your body go backwards again? Or do you want some less frequent visits to protect what you’ve achieved and go further into obtaining wellness and health?

Being on protective chiropractic treatment is much like keeping up your fitness by continuing to go to the gym or play in some kind of sport, or keeping your health optimum by eating the right foods.

If you eat well for 3 months and then let it all go again, what you achieved will all be reversed. if you go to the gym for 6 months and get fitter and stronger than you were before but then let it go again, what you achieved will all be reversed. Same thing can happen when you use chiropractic treatment to get your body structure nice and strong again, but then let it all go, your body will change and go backwards.

Chiropractors are more interested in preserving and maintaining your health through chiropractic treatment. We are just keeping your body well serviced like a car to allow it to function better and prevent future problems as much as possible. In the end, it is up to you whether or not you want to keep your body well serviced and maintained.

For treatment and a check-up, you can visit our Revolution Chiropractic and wellness clinic in Auckland, North Shore.

Should I Warm Up Before & Cool Down After Exercising?

Throughout any intense exercise session, the body is handling stress and has a risk of injury. This can be minimised by warming up and cooling down before and after your workout.

Before getting into your sport or strength training session, you want to get a warm up. This is going to prepare your body for exercise and increase your heart rate and breathing. Ideally, your warm up routine will consist of two-parts: a general warm up and specific warm up.

The general warm up

consists of jogging, biking, rowing or any other cardio exercise followed by dynamic stretching. Dynamic stretching is not your typical “touch your toes” stretching. It consists of movements that take your joints through their ranges of motion to warm up and stretch the muscles. For example, you can perform leg swings, shoulder circles and bodyweight lunges. The bodyweight lunges serve as a nice stretch for your hip flexors while also adding a little resistance exercise for your quads and glutes to warm them up.

The specific warm up

consists of specific exercises that closely resemble movements that you’ll be performing in your actual sport or training. For example, jumping exercises before getting onto the basketball court or some lightly weighted squats before your leg session in the gym.

The warm up is essential for your performance as it increases blood flow and oxygen to muscles, increases neural impulses to wake up your muscles and, most importantly, decreases the stiffness of connective tissues (ligaments and tendons) to avoid any muscle tears. Studies have shown that a structured warm-up can reduce your chance of injury by more than 50% and that’s on top of helping you perform better!

The cool down

is also important as it helps flush out any lactate (waste), prevent dizziness from blood pooling. It also decreases muscle soreness after your session. It consists of gradually decreasing your heart rate and stretching out your muscles. This also has two parts: general cool down and static stretching/foam rolling.

The general cool down

is similar to the general warm up since you can use jogging, biking or any activity at a progressively decreased intensity. Your aim should not be to sweat and go fast at this point, you just want to go through the motions and let your body slow down to a relaxing stop.

Following your general cool down you can get into some static stretching, which is the basic stretching where you hold stretches for around 15-30 seconds. You can also choose to use foam rollers or massage balls after your exercise to restore length in the connective tissues. The stretching and foam rolling helps reduce muscle soreness, increase muscle flexibility and stimulate circulation to flush out the lactate.

Be sure to hydrate well and eat a healthy meal after your workout to keep your body fuelled and recovering well!

Stay tuned next week for when we’ll take you through our ideal general warm-up and cool-down routine to cover all your bases!

Learning From Longevity Cultures: Part 3

Part III

In our final part of a 3 part series adapted from a TED talk on longevity cultures, we cover off the final 3 points.

Nature:

Spending time in nature also appears to be a commonality when these people groups connect with family and friends. If you live in a city this can be hard to do but take time in the weekend to get out into the bush or the beach. The fresh, unpolluted air is great for your lungs and the slower pace of nature can help de-stress your body.

They belong to a faith-based community:

This factor may be a combination of many things, a sense of purpose (point 2), relaxation (point 3) and a sense of belonging and community (point 6). Spirituality is an important and fascinating aspect of what makes us human, it gives billions of humans around the globe their sense of purpose. The Seventh-Day Adventists, in similar fashion to the Jewish culture, celebrate, relax and spend family time for a 24-hour period on the Sabbath from sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday. They call it a sanctuary in time where absolutely no work is to be done. One intentional day of holiday each week.

They drink a little each day:

I found this one somewhat surprising, as the consensus on alcohol is conflicting. Some studies say that no amount of alcohol is good for you where others say that red wine has the healthful benefit of antioxidants and beer has many minerals. I present this point with some caution as some readers (not you of course) might take this and think a bottle of wine each night is healthy. Drinking excessively is certainly not healthy, but a standard drink or less a few nights a week shared with friends and family may be beneficial according to this study. If alcohol doesn’t agree with you then I don’t imagine you are missing out on too much by skipping out on this point.

If living a longer, healthier life is important to you then make a point of trying to shift your habits. The combination of all 9 points is probably the most beneficial but starting with the ones you can easily do will get your journey to health started.

As mentioned in part one, this three-part series has been adapted from a TEDx talk by Dan Buettner, a writer for National Geographic and a longevity coach. If longevity interests you, you can find out more at https://www.bluezones.com/

Learning From Longevity Cultures: Part 1

Watching a TEDx Talk by Dan Buettner on longevity inspired me to write this.

The following three blogs are a summary of his talk with a few of my own ideas.

If you want to watch the original talk head over to YouTube and search his name otherwise stay tuned for a summary of his main findings. Scientists believe humans can live about 90-100 or so years and there are communities around the world that have a high rate of people who are living into their tenth decade. The NZ life expectancy is about 81 years which means Kiwi’s are missing out on 10-20 extra years. What would you do with 10 years?

The main thing a lot of people say when talking about living longer is that they don’t want to be in pain or incapacitated. But what if those years were full of life and joy? What else would you be able to achieve and how much more could you make an impact in other peoples lives with an extra decade or two? The majority of people in these long-lived communities, or Blue Zones (Seventh-Day Adventists in California, the residents of Sardinia, Italy, and the inhabitants of the islands of Okinawa, Japan) are not only living longer but are doing so in great health. In this three-part series we will cover the nine common principles you can learn from these cultures so you can add life to your years and years to your life.

They don’t exercise:

no, this doesn’t mean what you might hope it does! A sedentary lifestyle is not good for you. People in these communities set up their lives so they are nudged toward movement. They live in houses with steps and don’t have conveniences like premade food. They spend a lot of time and effort physically preparing food, cutting and collecting wood, fishing or farming their own food, and have more physically involved jobs. Basically their day to day is exercise but if you work a sedentary job exercise is still the next best thing so that you can minimise the impact of sitting all day. On top of regular exercise try to integrate more movement into your day by simply parking further away and walking to work or the shops. Yep, this will mean leaving home earlier, but convenience might be slowly killing you!

They live with Purpose:

In our culture we tend to gear our entire working life toward retirement at which point we become sedentary, giving up mental and physical challenges and along with it, losing a sense of purpose. Sure, your work capacity will decrease as you age but make sure you retire TO something and not FROM it. In Okinawa they don’t have a word for retire, they have a word ikigai, which means, “the reason you get up on the morning.” This could be a hobby, going to night school to learn a language or how to cook, picking up an instrument, joining a club or group, writing a book, being involved in your family’s life, the list goes on.

To be continued…
