Is Chiropractic Just for Back & Neck Pain?

Chiropractic Care, is it just about back and neck pain or is there more to it?

Chiropractic care can help with many things other than your back and neck pain. So, what is Chiropractor care exactly? Read on to find out.

The goal of Chiropractic care is to enhance your body’s function via the nervous system via the spine. Chiropractic care is about improving the motion of the joints of the spinal column (vertebrae) and therefore improving the nervous system. Your Chiropractor can also improve the motion of the joints of the rest of the body if needed.

The spine has two main functions:

(1) to provide support & allow movement

(2) to house & protect your spinal cord/nerves

The function of the nervous system:

The nervous system controls the function of every cell/tissue/organ in your body. Messages are transmitted from your brain, down your spinal cord, across exiting nerves to a particular body part; and then back up to your brain again.

These messages can be interrupted by spinal misalignments and this can affect and lower the function of the body part they are innervating.

A great deal of our clients visit us for wellbeing and maintenance check ups. Similar to how you may visit your dentist to have your teeth checked. You can visit a Chiropractor to have your spine checked and to prevent problems and damage.

Chiropractic Care - Misalignment

So why should I care about misaligned joints?

When your joints (any joint) are misaligned, they cannot move optimally. When a joint does not move optimally, 3 things happen:

1. The stabilising muscles that support that joint become lazy and weak. How?

Just like having a cast on your arm or leg, without moving the joints for just 1-2 months you will see a huge reduction of muscle tone and strength.

2. Nerve connection to that part of the body diminishes.

As the joints and muscles lose their movement and strength, the brains ability to send information to that part of the body also diminishes. Why? The brain uses the receptors in these joints and muscles to function correctly therefore with a lack of motion and activity, the brain can’t do its job properly. It’s use it or lose it for the body, brain and nerve connections.

3. Damage and degeneration (osteoarthritis) occurs.

More specific to the spine, without proper movement of the joints and strength of the muscles of the spine, the spinal curves lose their most functional shape and instead of acting like springs to distribute everyday forces, all the forces go onto the bones and discs of the spine and cause degeneration, damage/injury and other dysfunctions to occur. Note: this can happen anywhere in the body and in any joint.

Why is muscle strength important? (more specifically the deep stabilising muscles)

The deep stabilising muscles and their strength and activity are important because when they are not supporting a joint properly a whole host of problems can arise.

These muscles keep the joints in their proper position… so when they are weak:

a) The joint is not getting any support.
b) It’s not in its optimal position.
c) Keeps locking up and lacks proper movement.
d) The muscles keep getting weaker.
e) The cycle keeps getting worse over time.
f) Creates damage inside the bones, joints, discs and nerves.

This weakness and instability within the deep stabilising muscles also creates tightness and stiffness in and around the bigger muscles around the body such as the chest, shoulders, lower back, buttock and even arms and legs, creating a whole chain of improper movement and stress through the body.
