Turmeric Tea

 

Basic Turmeric tea recipe

Ingredients

  • 4 cups of water
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • Lemon or maple syrup (or both!) to serve

How To Make the Tea

  • Heat 4 cups of water, bringing it to the boil.
  • Add 1 teaspoon of turmeric.
  • Reduce the heat and let the mixture simmer for around 10 minutes.
  • Remove from the heat and strain using a fine sieve.
  • Pour into serving cups and add lemon or maple syrup to taste.

Turmeric Tea with a Twist Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 1 inch fresh ginger root, minced
  • 2-teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1-teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 lemongrass tea bag
  • 6 peppercorns (you can leave these out if you prefer!)
  • Pinch of sea salt

How To Make the Tea

  • Bring the water to the boil in a small saucepan.
  • Add the peeled, minced ginger root, turmeric, cinnamon, peppercorns (remember, these are optional!), sliced oranges, and sea-salt.
  • Allow the mixture to simmer on a medium low heat for 10-15 minutes.
  • Add the lemongrass teabag and allow to steep for around 3 minutes.
  • Remove the teabag and pour the mixture into a mug.

Creamy Turmeric Tea Recipe

Why not give your tea a creamy twist with some coconut milk?

Ingredients

  • 1 cup coconut or almond milk
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric
  • A pinch cayenne pepper
  • ½ inch finely chopped ginger root
  • 1 ½ teaspoon of maple syrup (or an alternative sweetener)

How To Make the Tea

  • In a pan, gently warm the cup of coconut or almond milk.
  • Mix together the turmeric, cayenne pepper, finely chopped ginger root, and the maple syrup.
  • Add a small amount of the warmed milk and stir it into the mixture.
  • Mix well until all of the lumps have disappeared.
  • Add the rest of the milk and mix.
  • Strain and then serve.

Sweet Turmeric Black Pepper Tea Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup maple syrup
  • 2 ½ teaspoons ground turmeric
  • Lemon
  • Freshly ground black pepper

How To Make the Tea

  • Mash the turmeric and maple syrup into a paste (you can then store this in a jar to ensure you have it on hand whenever the need arises).
  • For each cup of sweet turmeric black pepper tea, take a heaped teaspoon of the turmeric and honey paste.
  • Top with boiling water.
  • Add a squeeze of lemon and a few generous twists of freshly ground black pepper.
  • Stir and enjoy!

Turmeric lemon tea combines the sweet, tangy flavours of lemon and ginger, with a gentle kick from the cayenne pepper.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/8 tablespoon ground ginger
  • 1/8 tablespoon turmeric
  • Cayenne
  • Maple syrup to taste

How To Make the Tea

  • In a mug, mix together the lemon juice, turmeric, ginger and cayenne.
  • Top with boiling water.
  • Stir well.
  • Add maple syrup to sweeten to your personal taste.

  • Add a slice of orange, a dash of maple syrup, the juice of 1 lemon, and 1 teaspoon of coconut oil.

What is Turmeric?

For centuries, people have been using turmeric worldwide as a spice, medicine, food, and coloring agent across large parts of Asia. In India, it has been considered holy and auspicious for hundreds of thousands of years, not only due to its eye-catching color and unique flavor, but also because of the extensive range of health benefits that are associated with it. In fact, people often referred to it as the ‘Queen of Spices’!

Recent research has seen it promoted in the eyes of western science and it has been deemed as highly effective for treating osteoarthritis and various other health issues. Such as Crohn’s disease, stomach ulcers, skin wounds, kidney inflammation, and many, many more. It is also full of plenty of healthy nutrients such as protein, dietary fiber, niacin, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin K, potassium, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, and zinc.

The human brain is the organ that controls everything in our body. It acts as our engine and provides vital messages to different parts of our body to keep everything moving. Just like the engine in our cars, we keep it oiled, regularly serviced and well maintained. But how well do we maintain the health of our brains? There are several ways we can keep our brains well-groomed. This can be done through regular stimulus and healthy nutrition.

Improving the brain with stimulus

Just like other muscles in our body, our brain grows with constant stimulus. When we exercise our brain becomes stronger, smarter and better. We can stimulate our brain through many means such as reading, solving puzzles, playing challenging board games and regular exercise. Study has shown that if we do some sort of physical mental challenge it can help reinforce brain cell connection. This means we are less likely to suffer from mental diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Physical mental challenges involve your hands, eyes and brains; this means that these activities should not be done on our devices. Instead we should be consuming nutrients that are good for the brain such as omega 3, antioxidants, unsaturated fats and magnesium. A healthy diet can help your brain just as much as helping the rest of your body.

8 Benefits of Exercising

We all have an extremely busy lifestyle and quite a few of us may not have the time to exercise. Additionally, summer is coming up and most of us would want to get ready for the beach body. But as a health practitioner, it is my duty to emphasise the importance of exercise, how it changes the body and how much of an impact it has other than just looking good.

Here is a list of some reasons why we know exercising consistently is important:

  • Reduces the risk of osteoporosis.
  • Increases bone and muscle strength.
  • Lowers blood cholesterol levels.
  • Lowers blood pressure.
  • Decreases the risk of type 2 Diabetes.
  • Increases endorphins which makes us feel good.
  • Decreases the risk of dementia.
  • Improves posture.

We have special little things in our body’s mitochondria. These mitochondria act as the power generator. They generate energy in our body, also known as ATP, from oxygen, fats, sugar and protein.  These ATP are what fuels the body to do what it needs to do, anything from muscle contractions and conducting nerve impulses is generated by ATP. Exercise promotes a process called mitophagy. Mitophagy is the removal of damaged or defected mitochondria after a period of stress. This promotes new and healthy mitochondria to take over providing a more efficient system to burn fat and sugar. As a result, this leads to bigger and stronger muscles.

I’m not asking you to be an athlete and exercise over 2 hours a day. but, as a recommendation, doing 30 minutes of exercise every day is enough. We may already be exercising every day without knowing it such as mowing the lawns and walking to work. If you are not regularly exercising, I’m going to ask you to go for a brisk walk for 30 minutes after dinner around the neighbourhood!

There are plenty of different types of exercises but the main two are cardio and weight training. In the next two weeks, I’ll be covering the benefits of each. Just remember we should all go for a 30 minute walk after dinner this week!

Falls and the elderly

Falls are the main cause of morbidity and disability in the elderly. More than one-third of persons 65 years of age or older fall each year, and in half of such cases, the falls are recurrent. The risk doubles or triples in the presence of cognitive impairment or history of previous falls.

Reducing the risk of a fall has a few factors to it, the balance being a major one. In addition, the ability of your brain to recognize where your limbs are in space (proprioception is the technical term for those who are interested). 

An interesting study demonstrated improved stepping reaction time and ankle joint position awareness following 12 weeks of chiropractic care.  Although this is only one study, it does show improvements in factors linked with falls risk and stability.

It’s noteworthy that the participants in this study were all in their mid-sixties and older. You are never too young or too old to benefit from utilizing chiropractic care to improve the function of your nervous system and spine!

Healthy Food For The Brain

Introduction

Your brain is part of the central nervous system which controls every single cell in your body. It keeps your heart pumping, muscles moving, makes you feel and think. You can imagine that having a healthy brain is essential to keep you going throughout the day. As conclusion, the food that we eat plays an essential role in providing our brain with the essential nutrients it needs to function at its best.

Here are some foods that are essential in promoting brain health:

1) Flaxeeds (Linseeds) – Omega 3 fatty acids

High in those all-important omega-3 fatty acids that are essential for brain development and function, flax seeds add healthy, concentration-boosting fats to your diet. Moreover, flax contains alpha-linolenic (ALA), a type of omega-3 fatty acid that boosts the cerebral cortex, an area of the brain that processes sensory information. Sprinkle flax seeds on a salad or hot or cold cereal to get your daily quota.

 

2) Blueberries

Research has shown blueberries and other deep colored berries provide strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds. Conditions that have shown to contribute to brain aging such as inflammation and oxidation can be combated through consuming blueberries.

 

3) Broccoli

Like blueberries, broccoli has some powerful antioxidant properties. Thus it will also help fight in aging properties and neurodegenerative diseases of the brain. In addition, it is also high in vitamin K. One cup of broccoli can give you more than the recommended daily intake for vitamin K. As a result, vitamin K can help with memory.

 

4) Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate has a few brain-boosting compounds ranging from; cocoa, flavonoids, caffeine, and antioxidants. The compound in dark chocolate responsible for learning and memory enhancement are flavenoids. Flavenoids have shown to accumulate in areas of the brain that deal with learning which aids in age-related diseases of the brain.

 

5) Turmeric

The active compound in turmeric is called curcumin. This compound has shown to cross the blood-brain barrier itself and enter the brain. This allows the curcumin to interact with the cells directly benefiting them. Turmeric has also shown to have powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. We were once told that fats can do more harm than good and once deemed as an enemy to our diet. However, recent studies are showing that SOME of them are amazing for our health.

There are two main types of fats, saturated and unsaturated.
-Unsaturated ones are oil-based fats and are usually runny at room temperature.
-On the other hand, saturated ones are solid at room temperatures and are commonly found in animal-based foods and dairy.

So which one is good for the body? Unsaturated fats of course! and doctors are pretty much in agreement that eating foods loaded with saturated fats, such as butter, red meat and pork, can cause heart disease, obesity and diabetes.

 

What are some of the benefits of consuming good fats?

1. Lowers heart disease and cholesterol level

Why You Should Exercise As You Get Older

For many years we have heard the term “use it or lose it.” This term seems to be the best way to describe the problems we face as we age. There have been many researches showing the correlation between inactivity and diseases and disorders in the elderly population. Our muscles are quite important as we get older, they can provide the body with amino acids which can be used as energy for various organs. The maintenance of strong muscles is crucial for preventing metabolic diseases and aid in healthy aging.

 

Reduced risk of falling

Falls can be a major risk as we get older. Around 30 percent of elderly people aged over 65 falls at least once a year. So what should you do to prevent your muscles becoming weaker? Exercise of course! Some people believe that exercise may make you more prone to falls. However, that is a common myth and it is quite the opposite. Another great benefits turmeric has is its anti-oxidant properties. Anti-oxidants help in neutralizing oxidative damage from free radicals. What are free radicals? Again curcumin helps fight free radicals.

Studies have shown that curcumin can slow down the rate at which blood vessels form around the tumor and sometimes even killing it. Fluorides in Your Toothpaste

Introduction

Keeping our teeth healthy is an important part of our lives. Our teeth help us look great, keeps our jaws strong, and helps us chew and digest our foods properly. Without them, we won’t be able to eat all the things we love. So how do we keep our one set of teeth healthy and strong? By brushing them of course! Not a hard question, but have you ever wondered what goes in our toothpaste? More than 95% of all kinds of toothpaste sold have fluoride in them.

Research has shown some correlation between fluoride toothpaste and tooth decay. However, further research has shown that fluoride is a neurotoxin and can be harmful to the body, especially your brain. The most commonly used compounds in toothpaste are sodium fluoride or sodium monofluorophosphate.

Commercially sold kinds of toothpaste generally contain about 1100 to 1450 ppm, which is equivalent to about 1mg of fluoride per gram of paste. The lethal dose for adult humans is estimated at 5 – 10 g. If you put it into perspective, fluoridated toothpaste seems harmless, right?

 

The effects of fluoride

Well let me tell you this, even though the effects of fluoride ingestion in small amounts is negligible and not immediate. Fluoride can accumulate within the body especially in your bones and teeth. In addition to your bones and teeth it can also accumulate in your pineal glands. Your pineal gland is responsible for secreting melatonin which manages circadian rhythm and sleep patterns. Also when ingested, fluoride can pass through the blood brain barrier which is meant to protect the brain and nervous system from damage of foreign invaders. Research has found that fluoride, due to this occurrence, may be a developmental neurotoxin affecting brain development in children. Further research has shown that fluoride ingestion can increase the development of beta amyloid plaques, which is a classic finding in Alzheimer’s disease.

Fluoride can be found everywhere today and can enter our body in various ways. Not just in toothpastes, fluorides can be found in soft drinks, canned meals, fluoridated water and fruits sprayed by pesticides. Considering we brush our teeth two to three times a day, this plays a huge role in increasing fluoride levels within the body. On top of the food that we eat, we are constantly bombarding ourselves with toxins which destroy our body slowly.

Keeping ourselves informed is the best way to stay healthy. There are many toothpaste products that are fluoride free (see at the bottom of this article). But it doesn’t stop there, because toothpastes are not the only source of fluoride. Changing our diets are also a crucial part in staying healthy, not just in removing fluoride toxins but also getting all the right nutrients to stay healthy. More on that in our next blog.
